The external taskbar has a button on it that shows a drop-down menu containing all applications on all desktops. When there is no application window present on the desktop, clicking the button once and releasing the mousebutton shows the menu, until the user makes a choice. When there are application windows present, the menu disappears as soon as the mouse button is released.
