I ran into this bug when I emerged kde-base/kde-3.2.1 on my linux-2.4.25-gentoo-r2 system about a month ago. System Notifications no longer produce sounds either. Sounds were working fine prior to the update. My backtrace is useless. Other sounds (mozilla, mplayer, etc) work fine.

This problem was fixed for me by editing ~/.kde/share/config/knotifyrc to include these lines:

[StartProgress]
Arts Init=true
KNotify Init=true
Use Arts=true

I find this happening on my system as well.

Debian 2.6.7 kernel
kcontrol 3.2.3 (using KDE 3.3.1)

As in the first comment, System notifications crashes when clicking on it. Also, I was not getting any System notification sounds. I tried the tip in comment 2. Now, I have my system sounds (thanks!) but System Notifications still crashes in kcontrol.

Anyone still seeing this bug in KDE 3.5?

Feedback timeout, but please reopen if you're still seeing this problem in KDE 3.5
