I start kopete, and he asks me for my AIM password.  But it's hopeless, because my password is 9 characters, and 'pete stops listening after 8.  That is, no more *'s appear in the password entry after the 8th one, and then I get an error message that the password is wrong.

Unfortunately this problem renders kopete unusable, unless I can modify its config file to insert the passwords, which I will try to do as a workaround.
