Version: 1.3 (using KDE KDE 3.2.0) Installed from: Debian stable Packages OS: Linux Here's the sequence, can anyone confirm? 1. Start a new session (ie, log in from KDM) 2. Load "konsole" 3. Close console using the "X" in the title bar. I now have "kdeinit: kwin" and "kdeinit: kded" hammering the X server 100%. 3 processes all vying for the same CPU so system load hit's 3+ and memory starts disappearing steadily. However, if I repeat #1 and #2 but this time use the menu "Session -> Close Session" or using "CTRL+D" instead of using the "X" widget in the title bar, everything works as expected - *NO* CPU hog and no memory leak. I have a stack trace after using the close widget if that's useful? Tried a backtrace using "gdb konsole" but it reports that konsole exited normally. System is a Dell CPx-J laptop with ATi Rage Mobility M1 chipset, P3-650 and 256Mb RAM running a 2.4.24 kernel (patched to provide mppe/pptp support) and running standard Debian repositories plus the "backports.org" back-ports.

I have the same problem on my computer (a Dell Inspiron 8100). It also occurs just after some time of working and is really annoying. I posted it already as kwin bug (74119) till I recognized that kded seams to be the problem.

You need Qt-3.2.3, older Qt versions have this problem. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 64671 ***
Hm. I wish there was a debian package update for it. I don't have the time to compile from CVS at the moment.
I already sent an E-Mail to Ralf Nolden and he told me that he's going to make Debian packages of qt 3.3 in the next days. That should solve this problem then.

Hello James, Can you tell me how you resolved the problem? I've got the exact same problem. Ive got libqt version 3.1.2-0woody1. I saw a post saying you had to install version 3.2.3 or later, but I can't find a woody or backported package for it. Can you tell me how to solve this problem? Thanks, Rob Boerman
You might want to try the packages at: ftp://projects.gasperino.org/qt/ It solves a similar problem, it might do the trick for you as well.

On my Dell laptop, if I have "KLaptop" running (the nifty little battery monitor in the task bar) closing Konsole windows with the widgets eats my CPU. If I disbale (ie, don't run) Klaptop everything behaves. Here's a message I was sent today - but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. I'd be interested to hear how you get on if you try it before I do :) <BEGIN QUOTED MESSAGE> http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=74126 - ------- Additional Comments From cirrus the-penguin org uk 2004-02-22 03:28 You might want to try the packages at: ftp://projects.gasperino.org/qt/ It solves a similar problem, it might do the trick for you as well. <END QUOTED MESSAGE> Hope this helps you out. I had kded eating ~50-70% CPU while running KDE 3.4 on an Athlon XP 2600+ (?!) and finally got the usage level down by going into KDE Components / Service Manager on the KDE control panel and disabling a bunch of services. However, I wouldn't know why those services were hogging the CPU in the first place.
