Description Sander Devrieze 2004-01-25 22:32:55 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1.5)
Installed from: Compiled From Sources

An idea: a kio which implements the GR protocol 2 to access the photos on online galleries like they are part of the local filesystem.

How it could look like:
People type: "gr://server/map/" in Konqueror. By this they will see all the albums which are represented by a folder. If they open an album they can view the images inside of it. They can also upload files by just copying them to an album, they can see and change the EXIF data of photos, they will get the standard KDE pasword dialog for secured albums,... Because it's a kio there will be another big advantage:

It will be possible to access the photo albums via other KDE applications: Kuickshow for example can be used to do easier (consistent with slide show of local images), faster (caching in kio, downloading next photos while seeing one slide, effects between the slides can be done by Kuickshow,...) and real (no browser bars, no text,...) full screen slide shows without the need to have all files local on the computer (e.g.: you can do the slideshow by a friend without needing to burn a CD), also much more slide show effects will be possible, maybe the photo descriptions in the album can be showed in a "movie subtitle way",...

A next useful way to use this kio is with the multimedia screensaver. This screensaver can display the photos in an album but *also* the movies (e.g.: short movies of a digital camera which where uploaded to the album).

For more information about the protocol:
http://gallery.menalto.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=GalleryDocs&file=index&page=gallery-remote.protocol.php
(I heard of one of the Gallery Remote hackers that this protocol isn't final yet...so hint: we can get eventually some functionallity in it which could be useful for the kio)

Advantages summarized:
o less code will be needed to give much more power to other KDE applications
o usability improvement: consistent use of dialogs, applications,...
o So it will be a good thing for Gallery *and* KDE

Not yet in kde 3.2.2

Is there a way that I can donate funds to get this functionality included in KDE?

There is no way yet (paypal donations to kde don't go towards a specific functionality).
However Don Sanders' scheme for KDEPIM is working (http://www.kontact.org/shopping/)
so maybe you can talk him into extending it to the rest of KDE, such as this feature.

I can't really extend the CIS as is to all of KDE as it requires me to estimate the difficulty of resolving each bug. Allowing people to make pledges instead of paying in advance also takes time, (but has benefits like learning about organizations that use KDE).

However what I think could work well for all of KDE and may be worth doing is extending the bug system with a per bug paypal button. So people would make a payment in advance for a bug, and that money would be held in escrow until the bug is fixed and the money held in escrow is transferred to the bugfixer or some party they nominate. Prior to this transfer a customer should be allowed to ask for their money back less some paypal charge.

If there is support for such an idea I'm ok with looking into it, but the current situation is adequate for me; I don't have an incentive to do anything controversial. I think the issues that might be controversial are the ownership of the account where any money is held in escrow (at least I need read access to it to see who pledged money for what), and existing conflict resolution policies (I mean deciding when a commit is acceptable and a bug can be closed) will have extra pressure on them. (e.g. Kontact and primary components now have well defined conflict resolution policies).

I'm not sure how Coolo (bug system maintainer) feels about any of this.

Don.

can't this be done a lot easier by using the (already existing) kio webdav ?

Precisely. As requested, this doesn't seem likely, sorry.
