Description Jason Keirstead 2004-01-16 23:30:04 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources

Hi. I use KMail for IMAP access, and I have a Span folder. 99.99% of the time I could care less what is in there.

I sure wish I could right click->Empty this folder like I can for the local Trash folder.

Right now I have to click it, wait for headers to download, select all, hit delete, wait...

You should be able to just right click->empty, and have KMail retrieve all the message IDs in the folder, and delete them, in the background without interfering with reading other mail.

I know I could right click -> Move to trash, but I want the items deleted off the server, not all downloaded to my local trash. That defeats the whole purpose of server side filtering into a Spam folder.

I second this bug. This feature would also be useful for mailinglist folders, where you might want to empty all messages since they quickly build up. I know we don't want to crowd the context menu, so perhaps the context message could work as so:

1. right click on folder
2. select "Delete all messages..."
3. popup window (yesnocancel) comes up that asks "Do you want to move messages to trash instead of deleting them?" "Yes" "No" "Cancel"
4. clicking on "Yes" would take messages to trash, "No" would just nix them, "Cancel" would drop out of the operation

I cannot think of anything more logical and I am almost positive 99% of users will just think this setup works nicely. You get the added bonus of having a "confirmation screen" just in case they accidentially selected this option and we don't have any extra options in the context menu.

Let me add that the reason "move messages to trash" is often bad for IMAP folders is because you actually have to *download* all the messages in the folder to move them to the trash, which for folders you are hoping just to clear out, is an unnecessary procedure for sure.

Dan, you can (and should) configure a trash folder on the imap server. That
will make "Move to trash" a single imap operation on the server and very
efficient and quick. Unrelated to the feature request, though.

Yes, while I was riding in the car this morning, I actually thought of this
very idea...duh, but still, nice to delete when you want to delete.

Did I mention I love KMail? Just thought I would blurt out that random act of
appreciation.

Comment #1 mentions that the popup dialogue asking
"Do you want to move messages to trash instead of deleting them?" "Yes" "No" "Cancel" is an additional bonus for the user. As the messages are moved
to trash only, it would be very good if there is a possibility to
surpress the popup window with e.g. the option:
"Do not ask again" (or something like that).
