Description Steffen Weber 2004-01-02 01:23:16 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources

It would be nice if a Search Sidebar could be added to Kate. At the top there should be an input field for the search phrase and below this input field the search results should be displayed as a list, where each result gets one entry.

This way you could easily see how man results there are and by clicking upon an entry in the list it should be possible to directly jump to the line of this search result in the file. It would be even better if something like "find as you type" could be implemented in a way that as soon you've entered at least 2 characters or something like that the search result list gets updated every time you press a key. Maybe this should be disabled for regular expressions by default, because the performance hit might be too big.

Additionally it would be great if the lines where a string matches the search pattern could be highlighted. The highlighting should be more eye-catching than the highlighting which is used to indicate the current cursor position. Then it would be possible to see the matching lines immediately!

Of course, in case your document is very long it would be a time consuming task to scroll through it every time, but then it would be possible to click on an entry in the search results list in the sidebar (as mentioned in the original bug report) to jump directly to this line.

There is already a good "find in files" "plugin". I wish that would be moved over to the left-side IDEA pane instead of having its own toolbar (a waste of space) down at the bottom.

Same goes for the terminal button at the bottom. It would be great if these two could be rolled out as plugins (i never use the terminal) that people could choose to add to the IDEA pane.

Thank you for a great editor!

I want to support Steffens wish though mostly I would prefer an input like that of firefox placed in its status line: no covering popups plus "find as you type"

If you have the latest version of kdelibs, try F7 to show kates command line,
and then 'ifind <type search string>'

Thank you, didn't mind that feature before. Very nice!

The new search panel has been implemented on KDE 4 vesion.
