Description Casey Allen Shobe 2003-12-23 00:10:24 UTC
Version:            (using KDE Devel)
Installed from:    Compiled sources
OS:          Linux

1. The options used mixed-tense. Some are in the form of "Message received", and others "A message was received". They should all be present-tense.

2. They use different pluralizations. Some are singular, others plural, others infinite.

3. One option is gender-specific, referring to the remote user as a 'he'.

4. Some options contain too much wording, making more confusion and less clarity.

5. One option is protocol-specific, when it shouldn't be.

6. One is labelled "Sound notification for Kopete events". This is a horrible name and I have no idea what it is, so I'm skipping it until somebody can tell me. First off, I *might* want to assign a sound to it, or maybe I don't. Maybe I want some other notification instead. "Kopete events"...isn't that what I'm looking at a page of? Then wtf is this? There's some sound assigned to it in my settings, but I have *never* heard that sound before playing the preview...so it must be something specific. (Clarification please!).

This will have to wait until after string freeze, but here are the options I would propose to replace the current ones:
* Message contains your nickname
* E-mail notification from IM server
* Incoming message arrives
* Outgoing message is sent
* ??? (see note 6 above)
* Contact changes online status
* Contact comes online
* Contact goes offline

This is no good, messages can be highlighted for reasons other than that they
contain your nickname if you use the highlight plugin.

The rest of these seem needlessly condensed. The configure events dialog
is quite large and theres no need to mince words like this, also remeber these strings
are the only things describing the events in the popups.

Also, any event that is being notified has naturally occurred in the immediate past.
This is why past tense sounds so much better. Example, "Incoming Message Arrives"
vs. "An Incoming Message Has Arrived", which sounds more natural? The second.

My recommendations, these sound much better (in English anyways):

An incoming message has been received
An outgoing message has been sent
A highlighted message has been received
A new email message has been received
A contact has changed online status
A contact has come online
A contact has gone offline

Alot of the options probably need a good working over. Nice catches. I'm ready for the freeze to be over now. ;) (There's several other bugs that I can't really fix until CVS opens up again)
