Description Neal Becker 2003-12-16 15:56:02 UTC
Version: 1.5.94 (using KDE 3.1.94 (3.2 Beta 2), compiled sources)
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.2 20031022 (Red Hat Linux 3.3.2-1)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.22-1.2129.nptl

I have both ispell and aspell installed, and on my path. Selecting either in kmail/composer/tools->spelling I still get "Ispell/Aspell could not be started".

I can run aspell from command line:

Aspell 0.50.4.1 alpha. Copyright 2000 by Kevin Atkinson.

Usage: aspell [options] <command>

Does spell checking work in any other KDE application? It very likely that this is a general problem and not specific to KMail.

I suspect you are correct, but how can I debug it?

Solved.

I built from konstruct. Aspell dict for english was not installed.

I grabbed english dict from aspell.net, did configure, make, make install.

I found this out by trying spelling in lyx. It gave me the error message from
aspell.

kmail should do the same!

Replaced nbecker@fred.net with null@kde.org due to bounces by reporter

I just got hit by this bug. I didnt' get aspell working, moved over to ispell instead. Can I suggest that the error message is changed. if aspell is in path (which in reporters case, and my case, this is the case) then the error doesnt' tell me that it's not ?
If there is a problem using aspell, kmail (or the library it's using) should report the problem in a more logical way, rather then telling you it can't find aspell
Comment 6 Zack Rusin 2008-08-25 19:20:19 UTC
KDE doesn't try to start ispell/aspell via command line interface anymore.
