Description Carlos Woelz 2003-12-15 16:33:16 UTC
Version: (using KDE Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources
Compiler: GCC 3.3.1 mdk
OS: Linux

Reported by Eugenia from OSNews in her KDe 3.2 beta review.

There are too many options in kcontrol, and for the novice user is hard to find its way around. On the other hand (I personally, not Eugenia) I like very much the current Kcontrol, and would hate to see all flexibility of KDE to go away.

The solution would be a stripped down kcontrol, with simple options, and preferentially defaulting to icon view (not tree view), with only the most common config options. The access to this simple kcontrol should be restricted to accepted dialogs. But a way to access the full kcontrol should be available, and it should be easy to add mudules to it.

I am personally against changing options only on the future kconfig editor. It is a usability regression.

Here it reads "Reporter: Carlos Woelz" :-)

I suggest putting a 'difficulty' setting on each option, and then having a slider in the statusbar to say what level of user you are, and then it would only show you the options of the difficulty you selected and 'easier'. Know what i mean? Have gnome-like amount of settings by default, but if you move the slider across you get access to more advanced settings.

This has been partially solved in the new KDE4 splitting some "general" config dialog from more "advanced".

Hello! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this project has been unmaintained for many years so I am closing this bug. Kcontrol has been replaced by System Settings in Plasma. Please give the latest version of that a try, and open a new bug in "systemsettings" if you continue to have an issue. Thank you!
