This looks like an SANE problem to me, not like a Kooka bug. Can you please try to produce SANE-Debug code by setting the debug environment variable of your backend? See man sane-<your backend-name> for more info.
I don't want to have this dozens bug reports shown up in the most often reported bugs ;)
