Version: 0.7.3 (using KDE KDE 3.1.4) Installed from: Mandrake RPMs Compiler: gcc 3.2 march=i585 mcpu=pentiumpro OS: Linux Well i had it occationally while using kopete - once a day or so whenever i recieve a message, the whole X freezes. At that point i am only left with an option of restart. Kopete 0.6 which came default with mdk 9.1 was stable but the 0.7.x series shows this trouble. The problem is that i cannot access any tty nor can any one on the lan telnet my machine. Hence i havent been able to trace it. The hang is abrupt and iam forced to manually restart my machine. Also i have noticed that this bug exists only on my computer on the lan.Incidently i also run the jabber server if it has anything to do with the jabber plugin though i have seen it happen with winpopup, yahoo and msn.
what exactly were you doing when your system hung? There was another report like this, but only a few of us have been able to reproduce, and highly sporadically at that.

On all these occasions, only once was the system under heavy load (was converting a movie to xvid). My system is a p4 1.6 ghz + 384 mb ram so the system is rarely fully taxed. I guess on atleast more than half these occasions, it was just konqueror and maybe kmail in the background. Well the system freezes mostly when the new chat window starts opening and the person's id and the message are shown and also once when a person sent a message in an already existing chat window. Could it be a keyboard/mouse grab rather than a freeze? If this happens, could you try ssh-ing into this box over the network and see if the system is really frozen or it's just Kopete stuck somewhere blocking all input? Of course this assumes you have access to a second computer to do this from...

Here there seems bo to no disk seek, and also i cannot go to a tty by pressing [cntrl]+[alt]+(1-5) . Also remote machines cannot either telnet or ssh me. Moreover, the httpd and samba on my system also halts and so does jabberd.I have tried waiting for nearly ten minutes the first time it happened as i had unsaved data and subsequently i have also tried waiting for upto 6-7 min.

Being a userspace app Kopete doesn't have the power to do so (unless you run it as root ;) Therefore I'd almost say it's a buggy kernel, flaky hardware or a broken kernel/video driver. The strange thing is that apparently it only happens with Kopete for Sarath.

But then i had stopped a lot of servers, just keeping nfs, httpd, samba and jabber ,a few core processes and had then tried running kde.Even this had no effect. The problem was that my file system (reiserfs) had after some 10 forced restarts started reporting incorrect file sizes. So i have a doubht whether some core libraries or executables have (though highely unlikely) gone corrupt. Well i run the system under a normal user gving few root -like access powers and this issue has happened only while kopete is running. Also i have seen that this happens only with my pc and not with any other across the network.I have absolutely no idea how to recreate this bug or how to backtrace it even if it occurs Sarath Menon

I had tried the kbear 3.0 alpha1 release and in the past few hours, it had also caused a similiar effect on the system. I think it has to do something with the mandrake kde binaries though it seems strange that no other mdk users have experienced it. Also this is the first time that kbear has caused such a problem.But now i feel that the problem may be with the kde libraries after all. Sarath Menon
