Description Tobi 2003-11-09 22:35:46 UTC
Version: unknown (using KDE 3.1.4)
Installed from: SuSE
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.1 (SuSE Linux)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.21-99-default

Konqueror (especially when I use it as file browser) crashes many
times per day. Since I can't yet describe a way to trigger a crash (it
seems to be related to handling recently generated or moved files and
directories), here is the data of one crash.

I saw this very crash myself with 3.1.4. But I was managing for 40 minutes photos using the sidebar. Something I don't do that often.

It would help a lot if you could try harder to reproduce the problem. We had
lots of issues in KDE 3.1 < 3.1.3 and we were sure we fixed all of them, but
some corner case still crashes ;(

If you dare to, it would help even more if you update to latest RPMs:

> I saw this very crash myself with 3.1.4.

Can you reproduce it?

> But I was managing for 40 minutes photos using the sidebar. Something I don't
> do that often.

IMHO Konqueror should never crash, no matter if the triggering actions are frequently executed or not.
(BTW, Konqueror also crashed when I used it as browser, perhaps when I hit the up arror button. Might be unrelated to this crash.)

> It would help a lot if you could try harder to reproduce the problem.

As I said I already tried, but I tried again now. I still can't provide clear and reliable steps, sorry. But I was able to trigger a crash by roughly simulating what I do while the crash frequency increases dramatically:
(checking in Konqueror what a shell script or I on the commandline did)

1. Opened one Konqueror as file browser (with sidebar), minimized it.
2. Opened a second Konqueror as file browser (also with sidebar).
3. Clicked on a directory named del.
4. Opened a shell, cd'd into del, created nested dirs:

 $ mkdir a
 $ mkdir a/b
 $ mkdir a/b/c

5. Removed some in Konqueror, created some of them again, expanded the created tree, etc etc.

6. Clicked on the minimized icon of the first Konqueror instance => below crash.

This bug is quite annoying. I use konquerer to organize my digital photos. So this bug occurs often. Beside this bug KDE 3.1.4 is ok for me. I'll use the SUSE KDE RPMS, that's the only way to update for me.

Do you have an estimation when the new release with the bugfix will be available?
Will the bugfix be in 3.1.5 or in 3.2?

BTW: Thanks for this great project.

Roland: if you care so much, please update to ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/adrian/KDE-CVS-BUILD/latest-full-build and try to get more infos out of it.

bloody bugzilla...
Comment 12 Michael Brade 2004-03-03 23:08:03 UTC
CVS commit by brade:

Fix #67710: forgetDirs with three args does not remove the dir to forget
from the KDirLister's list! And in two places we did not account for that...

Testcase was: open two tree views, then

Konsole:
  mkdir -p a/b

Treeview a:
  open a and b (click on +)
  close a

Treeview b:
  cd a
  open b

Konsole:
  rm -r a/b
  mkdir -p a/b

close Treeview a. KaBOOM!! ... well, FIXED :-)

no, unfortunately not, I was a day or so too late. It will be fixed in KDE
3.2.2.

I'm happy that there in fact are KDE developers who care enough about crashing bugs in major KDE apps such as Konqueror.

I updated my KDE to 3.2.2, the bug seems fixed.

Thanks Michael!

Should this bug be already fixed in KDE 3.4.0 (Kubuntu)? Konqueror crashes every single time, no matter whether I try use it as a file browser or a web browser. If I start it and leave it background, after minute or two it crashes. If I try to do something with it, it crashes. It also shows all files and directories in filebrowser list twice. I can't even delete files by pressing Delete button, I have to right-click file and select delete from there. Hugely annoying.

While it crashes, it gives signal 11 (SIGSEGV), below is the stack listing.
