Description Sandip Sar-Dessai 2003-09-19 18:07:38 UTC
Version: 1.5.1 (using KDE KDE 3.1.1)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

As of the current version of KMail I could not find some features that could be useful to manage a POP3 mail account.

The general setting is that I would like to keep most mails on the server for two reasons. First, I am using multiple
operating systems and want to be able to fetch them from any, and second, I want to keep a backup copy of the
mails on the server.

It would be nice to have a feature like the one Outlook offers: deleting mails on the server according to settings.
Specifically, it would be nice to have mails deleted after a certain time interval (like a hundred days), or to delete
them when they are locally deleted. I could not find such a feature in the current KMail version; it seems that it is only supported to delete mails directly after having fetched them from the server.

Another thing that I miss is the opportunity to delete mails on the server based on a filter decision. It would be nice
if one could say "Delete mail on the server if subject contains xxx" or "Delete all mails on the server which have
been moved to folder yyy". Using such a functionality, one could easily identify spam mails and delete them from
the server, since they will in no case be of interest later.

I am seeing forward to getting an answer from you,

best regards,

/Sandip

I think that your real problem is that you are still using 1.5.1. That
certainly isn't a "current version". See below for detail.

When you configure your receiving account (Settings->Configure KMail, Network,
Receiving) there is a checkbox that says "Delete mail from server after
fetching". If you turn that off, it will be kept.

I believe it is possible to delete on server when locally deleted, but I can't
find the setting. There are many tools that can delete based on time -
fetchmail might be useful, and you can run it as a cron job. I don't think
that kmail can do that though.

This you can do the first using Settings->Configure POP filters..
The second is possibly a valid wishlist item.

Suggest that you close this wishlist item, and write a new wishlist that
discusses the manipulation of messages on the POP server in detail. I'm not
sure how much interest there will be though - the focus for KMail seems to be
moving to IMAP.

Since most features seem to be supported, there is no further need for this wish...
