Description Volker Kuhlmann 2003-08-04 04:23:33 UTC
Version: 1.5.1 (using KDE 3.1.1)
Installed from: SuSE
Compiler: gcc version 3.3 20030226 (prerelease) (SuSE Linux)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.20-4GB

kmail allows to compose a new msg when $HOME is out of space, with an external editor a temp file in /tmp/kde-*/ is created. This temp file is removed when the external editor terminates. When sending the mail, kmail displays a "fatal error - no space on disk" and quits, taking the unsaved msg with it.

If there's enough space to compose a msg with an external editor, then there's enough space to do an emergency save. Would it be possible to defer removing the temp file, or even better, instead of quitting, ask where to save the file (or check a few places for space and tell the user where the file was saved)?

The developmental version of KMail contains a fix for this problem.
The contents of the composer window is periodically saved to disk.

This fix should be included in KDE 3.2.

Periodically saving the contents of the composer doesn't help if the
user uses an external editor. Therefore I re-open this bug report.

But please note that I don't think it will get fixed. A "volume out of
space" error is an exceptional error and IMO it's not worth to put too
much work in avoiding trouble in case of a full disk, especially if it
only affects people who use an external editor. Only advanced users
will use an external editor. And those users should know enough about
full disks to be able to avoid this situation.

I agree.

First thing you know about a full disk is when you try and save
something, and get a disk full error. In that case, you just save
somewhere else and fix the disk full. No problem. Unless, of course,
the application only tells you "disk full - I am quitting now and stuff
your unsaved edits", which is what kmail is doing.

My mail logs also show that kmail didn't even *send* the mail before
quitting. Therefore, it seems to be correct to say that kmail simply
discards composed msgs of which outgoing copies can't be saved due to a
disk full, before even attempting to save (or send) the msg. This is a
bug. Instead, it should display "msg can't be saved or sent" together
with a button "try again" as well as the, existing, button "exit".
Useful would also be to be able to re-open the composer, as this would
allow to at least save the msg body elsewhere.

Subject: Re: composed mail lost when $HOME out of space

Immediately aborting KMail is currently the best we can do in case of a
full disk because this is the only way we can prevent the loss of
messages which KMail is receiving. That's unfortunate but it's probably
better to lose a message that you've written yourself than to lose
messages which you'll never know anything about in case they are lost.
Still I'd like to see this bug fixed.

BTW, I'm pretty sure that there are applications which warn you in case
a disk is running out of space.

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.

Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2.
