Description Carsten Lohrke 2003-08-02 17:48:27 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1.3)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
OS: Linux

I don't want/need kdegames, but like to use the plugins in kdeaddons. Could you separate/move the related code, please!?

Thx! :-)

kdeaddons can be compiled with having kdegames installed. Complain to the
Gentoo maintainer about the strong dependency.

Yes - I know - but I thought about it and came to the conclusion, that there is
no reason, why atlantikdesigner has to be part of kdeaddons and not kdegames.
Instead making the configuration of distros more complex, I would prefer better
packaging.

If you really say - no way - I'll file it at gentoo bugzilla, but I think it's
the wrong place.

The configure script for kdeaddons has code to detect that kdegames is not installed and
therefore not compile atlantikdesigner. That means that kdeaddons compiles fine without
kdegames.

I think this is not a good system. If you make kdegames a dependency of kdeaddons, you get complaints from people that want addons but don't want games. If you don't make it a dependency, then you end up with a situation where atlantikdesigner may or may not be added depending on which order you end up compiling the packages.

In my case, I had both kdeaddons and kdegames installed and was updating to the latest version. Since Gentoo does not treat kdegames as a dependency of kdeaddons, it was compliling kdeaddons first, but it was compiling the updated atlantikdesigner with the header files from the older atlantik in the kdegames package that had not been updated yet, causing compilation problems (see bug #66147).

Why is atlantikdesigner in kdeaddons instead of kdegames?

IMO this BR should be reopened so that people can vote on it and be counted.

Most other components of kdeaddons are enhancements to relatively "core" applications that people would use every day (Konqueror, Kontact). But atlantikdesigner is an enhancement to a *toy*.

It's true that KDE is officially agnostic about packaging. But KDE could save all distributions some work simply by moving atlantikdesigner to kdegames, which is arguably where it belongs anyway. Why the resistance to this sensible change?
