Description Andre Jung 2003-06-11 00:09:05 UTC
Version: 1.5.1 (using KDE 3.1.1)
Installed from: SuSE
Compiler: gcc version 3.3 20030226 (prerelease) (SuSE Linux)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.20-4GB-athlon

Kmail can't set the message to 'read'. If I've read a message it appears first as 'read', but at the next check it becomes 'unread' unread. Because of this I'm always confused by 'new mails'.
AND: The mails that are moved to SENT folder on the imap-server appear also as unread. So I get a notification of new mail every time I send a message.

sincerely,
Andre Jung

The IMAP server should automatically set the status of those messages to
read that KMail has downloaded. Which IMAP server are you using? Can
you manually set the status to read?

By "setting the status manually to read" I meant "Can you set the status
to read with Message -> Mark Message -> Mark Message As Read?"

Hello again,
the good things is, that if I set the status manually
to 'read', it stays 'read'.
The bad thing is, I don't know to get Kmail doing this
automatically the right way.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your assistance!

Andre

I would like to bring attention to this bug^H^H^Hproblem again - it seems as if the
GMX IMAP server is not behaving like others (fetched messages don't become read
automatically, only not-new).

I am suffering from the same (with KMail 1.5.2) and would love to see an advanced
option in the IMAP preferences like "mark messages as read on the server". Or
maybe do that in any case, or does it do any harm.

/me tries to resist requesting better IMAP disconnected support.. ;-) at least an
option to cache displayed messages locally would be great..

Thanks anyhow for this great mailer! :-)

Yes it does harm as it's unnecessary traffic. gmx' imap server is known to be
extremely buggy but we could give it a try if you can produce an ethereal log
of your session. Remember to remove your password.

The requested ethereal log file

I am no ethereal pro - sorry but there is unneeded stuff in between (CUPS,
local communications). I tried to wait some seconds between my actions to make
the timestamps more valuable. The password is not removed (I hope there is
really only the IMAP one...) but I changed it after creating this log file.

Here is what I did:
- started capture
- started kmail
- pressed Ctrl-L to see where new mail is (before that, 2 mails in Inbox and 2
mails in some other folder were known as new to kmail, now there were many)
- entered folder Mplayer-devel and selected mail by Michael Halcrow
<mike@halcrow.us> (now this mail became read in kmail)
- selected toplevel IMAP folder (the one with no mails, only subfolders) to
leave Mplayer-devel
- pressed Ctrl-L again - making the number of unread messages in Mplayer-devel
increase by one
- quit kmail

I hope this helps (BTW: to make kmail's UI not cluttered, but make it work for
most users, how about having advanced settings which default to the current
good behaviour and enable the broken-GMX-server-workaround if the entered IMAP
server name is imap.gmx.net or just contains ".gmx."?)
If you tell me some technical details/terms, I will send the GMX people a
support request - in past, they did respond more quickly to paying members
AFAIK.
Comment 8 Hans Meine 2003-07-28 15:11:02 UTC
Wow!! Just after my last comment, I sent the support request to GMX, and - believe
it or not: This is an excerpt of their answer: "unsere Entwicklungsabteilung hat nach
Tests mit KDE-Mail einen Bug im GMX-IMAP-Server gefunden. Dieser Bug wurde
behoben und der Bugfix im Laufe des Nachmittags installiert." (my quick translation:
"our developer dept. has found a bug in the GMX-IMAP-server after tests with
KDE-Mail. The bug was fixed and this fix installed in the afternoon") - the German
version sounds like ".. this fix _was_ installed" but it is a little bit ambigous and I still
get the same error. If the bug stays, I will tell them so this evening.
Hey - this is great news. No waiting for a new KMail release, everybody will be
immediately happy if they fix the server's bug, and the kmail developers do not
have to intergrate ugly fixes. :-)
Comment 9 Hans Meine 2003-07-29 16:41:14 UTC
Today, the GMX developers installed a bugfix of the bugfix on their server
(yesterday there was a misunderstanding on the UNSEEN flag in the RFC), and it
finally works!
:-)
They sent really competent mails with technical language, no lusers this time! :-)
