Description Alex Radu 2003-05-25 21:10:06 UTC
Version: 3.1.2 (using KDE KDE 3.1.2)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
Compiler: GCC 3.3
OS: Linux

No detailed folder view which will tell you things like how many files are in a directory. I know you can see this through preview, but I need to see it quickly from the beginning, I don't want to browse over every folder! Check out Nautilus 2.3.x to see what I mean.

I don't understand what you want. Please describe it.

If you want to have a preview of what is in a directory without entering it, you can
activate the "Folder icon reflects contents". And hovering with the mouse pointer
over the icon will also tell you how many files are there in the directory.

Well, what I mean is having meta data like how many files are ina folder listed
under the folder.

Check out this screenshot: http://art.gnome.org/show_screenshot.php?screenshotID=13

Se ethat under folder sit says how many items there are, that's waht I want and
for items it should just say how much space they take up.

By hovering folders (and any files) you can get the same info and more in
tooltips.
Comment 4 Alex Radu 2003-06-16 07:41:50 UTC
I know, but that's not really what I mean. I want to be able to quickly see how
many items are in a folder or how large files are at once and not have to hover
over each item.

If its a folder it should display the items in it, if its a file it should
display its size. Check out nautilus for more on this. I think this is a pretty
helpful feature.

Hovering is great too, this does not replace hovering previews. i consider this
an easy way to quickly get you close to waht you need, the hovering previews are
the tool used when you are not too far from your file.

I know what you mean, but if it's implemented it should also be fully
configurable, eg. I would want it to show the numbers of subfolders a folder
has, or the playing time of audio files etc., not just limited to one default
which might be useless for me, you get the idea. Something like that would
indeed be nice to have, hope you have luck finding someone who's equally
enthusiastic as you are about this feature and actually implements it. =)
Comment 6 Alex Radu 2003-06-16 22:42:57 UTC
Yeah! That would really rock, having the metadata determine what is goign to be
shown under the folder is a great idea. For example a sounds file or movie file
could have the playing time,a picture th size, a folder the number of items etc.

But, if you do make this configurable to a greater extent than disable/enable I
don't really know if it would be sucha good idea, it may be too many options to
adapyt to all the kinds of data, it needs to be simple and powerful.

Here is a screenshot of older versions of Nautilus and Konqueror side by side, but clearly showing wha tI mean about the detailed folder view, which is not actually just for folders, but any files.

Notice the information, right under the title of the item.

What I want is to have the size column display meaningful info for folders, not just so I can read it quickly, but so I can sort my listing by the number of files inside the folders.
Comment 9 Stephan Sokolow 2008-11-13 02:53:57 UTC
Heh. I finally got Konqueror 4.1 to work and, surprise surprise, DolphinPart does what I wanted.

I do think Alex has an interesting point, but if it's implemented, I hope it can also be done as a separate column. A playing time column for audio and video files or a dimensions column for images and video would be nice, but I'd want the option to pick and choose which set of metadata gets displayed simultaneously in a given situation or it just becomes an even bigger hassle. (And I'd never set them to replace the size column. I only do it for folders because the file size for folders is essentially meaningless)

Now that Konqueror doesn't even have the "folder icon reflects contents" option, that makes whatever information details view can provide even more useful, it should include the number of files, if possible.
Comment 11 Stephan Sokolow 2009-03-03 23:45:57 UTC
Do you mean just files or the number of entries? Because Konqueror 4.1 and above already do the latter. (The size column will show "5 items" for a folder with two subfolders and three files in it.)

All reports about file management mode reported against KDE 3 (konqueror) has been closed: konqueror in KDE 3 is no more developed and mantained. All bugs and wishes which could be interesting for Dolphin in KDE 4 (the new KDE file manager) has been collected into a specific list.

Please try the new file manager before request new features and report bugs.

Before submitting new reports check carefully the already opened KDE/Dolphin reports in order not to add duplicates.

Many thanks.
