Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1.1a) Installed from: Mandrake RPMs OS: Linux In Mac, CD Burning is easy. They just drag-and-drop (as usually in mac, duh!) files for burning from Finder (filemanager) to CD-RW icon on desktop. When they have finished "copying" files from where-ever-they-are-located to CD-RW disk, Mac users just select Burn from Desktop menu. It's just that easy. I am not a "real" programmer, but know litle about KDE, and in _my_ opinion, it should not be hard job to do, example, "alias" to K3B file selection dialog. So when files are dragged to icon on desktop, they are really dragged to K3b, and all the hard work is done by "real" cdburner, but in users view, it's just like in god'ol Mac, not like in M$ platform. BTW, KDE/Linux get atleast one more user IF this feature is created.
I was going to change the product in this bug report, but I don't know where this bug belongs. It should be a mix of kio_devices and k3b (as per user suggestion). Or another CD-burning application. But it's not kdesktop. Any takers? By the way, there's kio_newcd.
let the k3b author decide :)
Perhaps someday. Currently other things have higher priority.

Windows XP has good integrated support, also. you can drag files to the cd-rw, like copying a file, and if you click on the cd-rw to display its contents, it shows the icons as semi-transparent links to the files. the context menu has the option "record these files on the CD". I like this behavior, because you can change your compilation as much as you wish before actually burning. It should also have the option to close the CD or leave it open. Hmm, and how about audio CDs? It should detect if the files are of some audio format (wav, au, mp3, ogg, flac, or a mix of them) and ask if the user wants a data cd-rom or an audio cd.
I tried to do such a thing but dropped it. I don't think this is what I want to spent my time on... maybe someone else wants to create something based on the K3b libs...
>I tried to do such a thing but dropped it. I don't think this is what I want to >spent my time on... maybe someone else wants to create something based on the K3b >libs... I am sorry to hear that. I still think that burning a cd should be completely transparent to the user as is the case e.g. with a floppy drive nowadays. I think that a specialized tool like K3B is good for advanced tasks, but is in the way when a user simply would like to copy a few files onto a cdrom.
Perhaps you could look for ideas in the Nautilus CD-burning module? It's already implemented and working.
the problem is not the ideas.... it's that my interest in this is very small... if someone would like to do it he or she is welcome to use the k3b libs for it...
Perhaps someone could have a look at KIO_Burn, which implements a burn:// kioslave. http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=14779
