Version: 0.6.90cvs >= 20030511 (using KDE 3.1.9) Compiler: gcc version 3.2.3 OS: Linux (i686) release 2.5.68 After typing a message in the box, hitting the enter key does not send the message as would be expected, but adds a newline. This is very frustrating behaviour.
in the chatwindow, go in Configure -> ShortCut and you can select the short cut you want (enter in this case) to send a message. (by default, it is Ctrl+Enter)
This should be shown in some general configuration. Many people here have said they don't want to use kopete because of this stupid behavior. Somehow they don't have a this thought to search for this option under 'shortcuts'. Even I didn't think that this could be changed under shortucts until I found this report. So please add some kind of general option to 'configure kopete' window - maybe somthing like -> use this key to send message: - enter - ctrl +enter (default) It would be more understandable and convinient for people this way. And very advanced user can still change this to whatever they want under 'shortcuts'.
No it should not be in general configuration. This would violate KDE style guide rules. That is why it was removed from there. Besides, why should you be restircted to only choosing "Enter" or "CTRL+Enter" ? With KDE you can set any key combination you like, plus an alternate (you can bind both Enter *AND* CTRL+Enter, or Enter and ALT+S, or anything at all) All KDE apps have all shortcuts under Configure Shortcuts. It is the same in every KDE application.
Setting the short cut does not work in KDE 3.2.2 / Kopete 0.8.2. I tried setting the shortcut to both Return and KP_Enter. Neither work, and I must use Ctrl-Enter still to send a message.
Aha, nevermind, the advice of another Kopete user helped. It seems that Settings --> Configure Shortcuts --> Send Message in the Kopete window does not equal Settings --> Configure Shortcuts --> Send Message in the chat window. The one in the settings dialog reachable from the contact list window doesn't work, I assume it's the shortcut to send a message to the highlighted user? But I'm really not sure. The one in the settings dialog reachable from the chat window does work. This is a horrible horrible horrible usability problem, Kopete shortcuts should be Kopete shortcuts, so I'm keeping this open.
There is still another problem... The enter on the numeric keypad is not the same as the regular enter key. So to set things up properly, you must set the shortcut to both Return and KP_Enter. Yet usually KP_Enter does the exact same thing as Return (enters a linebreak), so this is pretty baffling to users as well.

> The enter on the numeric keypad is not the same as the regular enter key. That's because they ARE two different keys. If you want both enter and return to send your message you just assign both of them to "send". I renamed the send message from contactlist now so it shouldn't be so confusing anymore. What I'd still like to see is a way to edit shortcuts of the whole app in that dialog, with both chatwindow and contactlist shortcuts put into categories (but this has nothing to do with the bugreport).
I still have a problem using the ALT-S shortcut to send my message. Since the ALT-S is also the shortcut to open the SETTINGS menu, I dissabled the menu bar in my chat windows using CTRL-M. But if I open a new chat window the ALT-S shortcut does not work! I first have to switch ON and OFF the menu bar (using ctrl-m), and from that moment the ALT-S shortcut works properly in that specific window.
