i'm actually wondering if what i'm encountering wouldn't happen to be "just the way knoqueror works".  while using konqueror if the icons are always shown in big, there i have to double clik to open/execute a file, but as soon as i change the display to 'list' or 'texte' it switches the way the mouse acts and therefore one click opens/executes a file.

See mouse settings to enable single-click globally.
