Version: (using KDE KDE 3.1.1) Installed from: Unspecified Linux Issue: Konqueror's Navigation Panel is becoming a central place for accessing folders, services, bookmarks, history, news site panels, RSS applets etc. and could be extended with progress dialogs, IM contact lists, control center etc. But this potentially very useful feature requires you to have at least one window of Konqueror opened. Also more and more people are complaining about Konqueror being crowded since it offers to much in every of its windows, taking away limited space in each one of them. Proposed Solution: Instead removing functionalities add them by (optionally) making the Navigation Panel globally accessible by offering it as an independent applet which is always accessible on the left or right side of the screen.
A first step for making the sidebar globally accessible is now in CVS HEAD. It's neither complete nor bugfree, but please have a look at it and tell me if it is how you imagined it Kind regards Joseph Wenninger
OOh, this is interesting, it sounds a lot like the way MAC OS menus work except now with toolbars too. While this is probably a very cool feature, never tried anything like it so can't say from experience. There is no doubt in my mind that Konqueror needs UI cleanup and needs to have abig cleanup in its menus especially by merging many of the realted items into one wizard or dialog. I can imagine many ways it can be improved just by loking at the CVS Nautilus or even MS's explorer. I believe Konqueror is usually technically superior to both, its UI isn't IMO. I think this proposed feature is probably hgoing to help, but I think that this is not a solution in itself and an interface cleanup is still necesary. This is more like when a kid says hes going to cleanup his room and stuffs everything in the closet, of course this isn't really such a good example, since this feature would serve more purposes than just moving some of Konqueror's feaures to a Kicker extension, however you understand my idea. Please correct me if I do not understand how this feature would really work, a screenshot would helpa lot.
NM, i thought by navigation panel the bug reported meant the toolba with the home, back, forward buttons.
sidebar/navigation panel can be used as a kicker panel
kicker RMB menu-> add -> panel -> universal sidebar
