Description Klaus Kyrsting 2003-04-04 01:19:40 UTC
Version: (using KDE 3.1.0)
Installed from: Mandrake Linux Cooker i586 - Cooker
Compiler: gcc version 3.2.2 (Mandrake Linux 9.1 3.2.2-3mdk)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.21-0.13mdksecure

After upgrading several times from 9.0 to 9.1, the last time performing a clean install (during which my old HP Laserjet 2 was configured and tested ok) I cannot print from KDE apps: their print dialog presents '-----' as the first 'name' option, instead of 'Printer'. When I select 'Printers' in 'Peripherals' in KDE control center, no 'printer' appears. After activating 'Administrator Mode', a 'Printer' appears in italics at the top, but when a click on it, I get a KDE crash. I have no problems printing from non KDE apps, e.g. Mozilla prints ok.

I use 'higher' security level.

I forgot to mention, that the same crash behaviour occurs if I try to add a new printer -
after a successful test print using CUPS v1.1.x was completed
Comment 2 Thiago Macieira 2003-04-04 02:12:41 UTC
Your backtrace is incomplete, so we can't ascertain where the crash occurred.

Can you identify if the problem is the same one as that reported in bug #56263?
There's a specific error message that you might see
(KExtendedSocket::connectionEvent called by no data!).
Comment 3 Klaus Kyrsting 2003-04-04 10:34:30 UTC
No, I don't think it's the same as #56263 - my problem occurs when using the default:
"Generic Unix LPD Print System" (which seems to work in #56263). When selecting
CUPS I get the same crash as in #56263.

A new observation: the name 'printer' isn't shown when using "Generic" (unless adm.
mode is invoked), but when "CUPS" is selected, 'printer' is shown at the top in italics
(not in adm. mode), and the crash of the KDE app then occurs when clicking on 'printer'
(which seems to be the #56263 bug).

Sorry the backtrace is (still) incomplete - I don't see any specific error mess.

1) Under Mandrake, you should select CUPS as print system

2) if you get a crash as described in #56263, then you should try
   solutions or workarounds proposed there

3) the fact that you don't see any printer as a normal user may
be related to CUPS configuration. Could you post your
   /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file.

Michael.

# BrowseProtocols: which protocols to use for browsing. Can be
# any of the following separated by whitespace and/or commas:
#
# all - Use all supported protocols.
# cups - Use the CUPS browse protocol.
# slp - Use the SLPv2 protocol.
#
# The default is "cups".
#
# NOTE: If you choose to use SLPv2, it is *strongly* recommended that
# you have at least one SLP Directory Agent (DA) on your
# network. Otherwise, browse updates can take several seconds,
# during which the scheduler will not response to client
# requests.
#

#BrowseProtocols cups

#
# BrowseAddress: specifies a broadcast address to be used. By
# default browsing information is not sent!
#
# Note: HP-UX does not properly handle broadcast unless you have a
# Class A, B, C, or D netmask (i.e. no CIDR support).
#
# Note: Using the "global" broadcast address (255.255.255.255) will
# activate a Linux demand-dial link with the default configuration.
# If you have a LAN as well as the dial-up link, use the LAN's
# broadcast address.
#
# The @LOCAL address broadcasts to all non point-to-point interfaces.
# For example, if you have a LAN and a dial-up link, @LOCAL would
# send printer updates to the LAN but not to the dial-up link.
# Similarly, the @IF(name) address sends to the named network
# interface, e.g. @IF(eth0) under Linux. Interfaces are refreshed

Hi again, Michael.
I don't find any options in Mandrake Control Center to select print system -
did you mean KDE Control Center? In that case, I tried both:
- 1) Generic UNIX LPD Print System (default )
- 2) CUPS (Common UNIX Print System)
In 1) i get the problems described earlier
In 2) i get same problem as described in #56263

Yes I meant the KDE control center.

Try to fix point 2 with workarounds described in that bug report.

Michael.

Everything's normal. Anyway, I strongly suggest that you use the CUPS
plugin, and try to get it working, see full discussion for #56263 to
help you. When you select "Generic..." this reduces only into a
minimalist wrapper around CUPS anyway.

Michael.

Hmmm.. the discussion in #56263 is too technical for my current level of experience, so
I simply dare not attempt any patching, to not make things worse. Could you please be
more specific (don't rush for my sake - I can live without printing for a couple of weeks, I
guess).

I cannot help you before next week. But a quick wokraround that you
can try is to add the following line to /etc/cups/cupsd.conf:

ServerName localhost

(be sure that this is the only "ServerName" declaration). If this
doesn't change anything, just revert it.

Michael.

Comment 11 Klaus Kyrsting 2003-04-04 18:39:43 UTC
Ok, that helped - I can hop, I can run, I can print! (after a reboot) - and even saw a nice
printericon in the systemtray during printing.

Thanks a lot - that's what I call good and fast support. However, I guess the current bug
report (#56820) is still an issue, though I don't need to bother anymore.

The last useful comment to bug #56263 contains:
------- Additional Comment #28 From Thiago Macieira 2003-04-02 15:19 -------
Apparently the CCMAIL I sent from CVS with the patch did not get through. You can
 find the patch here:

 For KDE 3.1.1

http://webcvs.kde.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/kdelibs/kdecore/kextsock.cpp.diff?r1=1.44.2.4&r2=1.44.2.5

If you're using KDE CVS, make sure you've got the latest checkout for kextsock
 (revision 1.57 or higher).

That's the patch you have to apply to your kdelibs/kdecore. All users reported the
problem was solved.
Comment 13 Michael Goffioul 2003-04-07 13:35:30 UTC
I assume it's the same bug.
