Description Michael Schuerig 2003-01-27 20:19:39 UTC
Version: 0.7.1 (using KDE KDE 3.0.4)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages

I would like to have a facility for accessing RSS/RDF feeds
integrated with KDE.
Currently, Frerich Raabe (raabe@kde.org) and Joseph Wenningen (jowenn@kde.org) are working on putting such a thing into the Konqueror sidebar -- see kdenonbeta/konqsidebar_plugins/konqsidbarnews.

IMHO, this would fit much better into KNode. Or, more exactly, It should be possible for a user to handle (use, subscribe to, read) RSS/RDF feeds and newsgroup articles in a similar way.

Huh? Don't we have this already with the kicker applet knewsticker? Or am I
misunderstanding this request?

That Konqueror sidebar plugin does indeed use KNewsTicker's code for parsing
the RSS feeds.

One could think about making KNode talk to KNewsticker via DCOP. Or embed
a "KNTPart".

No, we don't have the "similar way" part.

What would that mean? Having a news *ticker* embedded in KNode wouldn't
make much sense. What I was thinking of is something like this: In
KNode, a feed for, say, the Heise Newsticker (or Slashdot, or
O'ReillyNet, ...) is displayed in the Group View. When I select it, its
items (article headings) are displayed in the Header View. Then, when I
select an article, the complete article is displayed in the Article
Viewer in an embedded khtml part.

I would also like to see this functionality in KNode.

Currently I'm using nntp//rss (http://www.methodize.org/nntprss/) as a bridge between KNode and RSS, it works (It would could work better if KNode displayed html), but it would be cool to have this functionality natively in KNode.

I saw my friends outlook setup with rss feeds...

They kinda scrolled by as they were new, but were archived amongst the email... in their own foulder...

The killer feature/reason to store these in an email type program, is that folders with new items are highlighted, keeping the user from having to scan the news, or load web pages... and all that jaz.

I'm looking into knode a bit...

but right now I think this rss feed stuff should be integrated with Kmail.. or kmail integrated into something else that also stores rss feeds and news items in the same fassion as email..

and or the instant messenger kopete... (because of the msn style notifcation menu.. that would be reused to show scrolling news items...

and heck.. I actually want to store my instant messeges in the same type of archive as my email... which might be knode...

Yes it will be cool to make it like in feeddemon (http://feeddemon.com) or like in straw (http://www.nongnu.org/straw/).

I don't think integrating RSS support into KNode makes much sense, it's too diffrent from NNTP.

But if you just want to have a single application for mail, news, rss feeds, etc.: Use Kontact. It integrates KMail, KNode and with aKregator (http://akregator.sourceforge.net/index.php) even a RSS reader.
