Description allabos 2002-11-24 11:54:07 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.0.4)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

The only application I REALLY miss from windows is an application called
Powermarks (I don't think it would even work under wine correctly as you'll
see). For those not familiar with this utility let me briefly explain how
great it is.

Powermarks is a small lightweight bookmark utility unlike any other I've seen.
Most bookmark managers all run on a folder hierarchy concept. This kind of
system is fine for a small number of bookmarks, but when you have tons it
gets annoying. As a small example say you are reading an article on Travel
but it also talks a lot about scuba diving. Maybe you have a folder called
travel/leisure but you like scuba diving a lot so you also have a scuba
diving folder. Where do you put the bookmark? I've run into this problem a
lot with development in Java.. think how many sites or pages cover more than
one area. With powermarks the problem is solved. Say you are bookmarking a
site ..you hit your hot key combo to bring up powermarks and it fills in by
default some stuff (page name, link, etc) but then you are able to add
keywords, maybe you want to enter travel and scuba diving so you add them and
hit enter. Now when searching for bookmarks you just start typing "tra.." and
you'll start to see bookmarks with the key words with tra in them. Then type
in scuba and you have only travel and scuba bookmarks.

Of course there is tons I'm not even covering. It would be a great program for
linux types because they are often more keyboard driven anyway. (You can type
travel -scuba and get back all sites on travel not having to do with scuba).
Other great things are that it synchs with a server so you can use it at work
and at home and always have the same bookmarks in synch. It uses different
browsers as well which is nice. You aren't tied to any one browser. Anyway
there is tons more to it, yet it's lightweight and very fast.

Support has mentioned they are hoping to port it to linux but in the mean time
is there anything like this for Linux?

Sorry, I thought I marked the bug as "wish", but I was jus too late to
discover that it was actually marked as being a bug. Is it possible
to have it changed to wish?

I posted this message to the Suse list and I'm glad someone else posted it
here. Is the one big thing I miss. An alternative approach without developing
an entire application is to at least provide the functionality that mozilla
has for it's bookmarks. Moz allows you to enter key words for your bookmarks.
You then can search through your bookmarks by typing in keywords you want to
look up. This is a feature that would be great for Konq. With hundreds of
bookmarks it makes it easy to find certain ones fast that might be in
different folders.

I also think that having keywords and maybe rating (can we call it rich bookmarks ?), a good search engine and server synced bookmarks would be useful! I'll vote this feature request =).

exactly what I just wanted to paste here as a wish. Something like this could very well integrate in a desktop search application.

By the way, I think hierarchical File Systems are outdated at least for user file storage! Somebody should address that problem and start a DB file system, where the files I put in there will be indexed, right when I put them there and no stupid daemon has to run in the background for indexing.

The files are stored in there with a million attributes and the file manager interface lets me choose of those attributes, like "business, letter, last week". And when I want to copy this thing to disk then, it just produces a nice oldfashioned file.

Same with bookmarks, ...
Everything should be stored in the DB. Then we could finally get something like an integrated revisioning system up and running.

Those desktop search apps are just a damn workaround to what really needs to be done. Let's innovate! Nobody has that yet!

Ach ja, and the keywords for categorizing could be taken from the page keywords meta tag for example or maybe it is somehow possible to get some info from google for that?!

I was just about to post the same wish, I was thinking along the lines of "tagging" in Digikam etc.

Great idea, I have two panes of boomarks already and I am really overflooded by them :-)

I think this is a duplicate of bug #128004
So, I'll make the same comment here : wouldn't this be a great place to use the power of nepomuk ?
