Description Jay Hamilton 2002-11-23 17:45:49 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 1.2)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

When printing from Kwrite the window shows a page number that is different from the actual number of pages in print. My printer hp 845c prints out the number that the kwrite shows but not the complete document.
I have tried clicking 'all' and that didn't help, I have also tried clicking on a 'range' and entered numbers larger than the document [as I have no way of knowing how many pages are the correct number] and that didn't work either. I have also tried printing from the preview mode and that didn't work.
This is very consistent. However it is most problematic [meaning worse] when I am using a serif font in the document.
Comment 1 Jay Hamilton 2002-11-24 14:13:54 UTC
This is in KDE 3.0.0 not 1.2
SuSE 8.0 personal
it happens from within kword
Comment 2 Michael Goffioul 2002-12-02 13:55:27 UTC
When you "print to a PS file", and view the result with kghostview or gv,
do you see the entire document?

Michael.

Yes- and it prints the entire doc from here too- that's at least an easy
workaround until thenewer version of KDE arrives.

When you print to your regular printer with preview enabled, do you see the
whole document in the preview window, or are some parts/pages already missing?

In preview I could always see all the pages of the document- I even tried
printing fromthat view and still did not get a complete document- the view doesn't look
much differentfrom the one in the ps file either.

OK, last test. Print to your regular printer with preview enabled. While
previewing, there should be a temporary file called "kdeprint_XXXXXX"
somewhere in your $HOME/.kde/tmp/ directory. This is the PS file you're
currently viewing. Make a copy of that file (because it'll get deleted
after previewing) and print it using the command-line tool "lpr". Do you
get the whole document?
Sorry for all these tests, but it looks more like a printer driver problem
than a KDEPrint problem. I'm just trying to locate the actual cause.

Michael-
This I fear is not what you hoped-
1] I could not find the file you wished me to find- I tried every
combination of find that I could think of and the only response I got was
no such file found.
2] To make sure that what I was experiencing was still going on- I first
created an 18 page document. I then clicked print and indicated preview
which in fact did not show the entire document however it still showed more
than what was actaually printed. [kwrite showed 8 pages in the border, the
print preview showed 18 pages however the content was different and
truncated the content by about 1 paragraph- the actual content
3] I printed the document from the preview- the printer printed 18 pages
however the content went at least a page more.

I hope this is explicit enough but go ahead ask away.
Please keep in mind that I am coming from a wintel situation and so the
only way I understand to find a file is to click find a file in the drop
down menu and then type in information if you wished me to do it another
way - you will have to be very explicit.

From your description, I have the strong impression that this is a font
size and/or page size problem. As if kwrite thought the page was bigger
than the actual size, and "prints" text out of the printable area.

The temporary file you have to search for is "kdeprint_XXXXXXXX" where
all the 'X' are random characters. To look for those files use the
command (in a terminal) "find ~/.kde/ -name kdeprint_\*".

Michael- it's not happening. I typed in exactly what you print above into
a console [with root permissions] and no such file continues to be the
result. I tried it about 9 times. In different configurations with
different documents and document lengths. I tried it before I began to
print from the preview, I tried it while it was printing. No go.
Re; your comment about page size or font size. I do have more trouble when
I use a serif font and I try to print a font size of 13-16 large. So it
could be that this is part of the problem. But what is the solution?

You are sure that the file exists only when the preview window is
open: it has been created by the app, and not sent yet to the printer.
This is the only safe way to copy this temporary file: the fact that
the preview window is open gives you time to search for and copy the
file (actually until you close the preview window).

If this is a font problem, then the fix is to be found in the app
itself, and not in KDEPrint.

I'm not sure what you want to mean with this paragraph- as far as I can
tell the filenever exists.

I just mean that the temporary file exists only when the preview
window is visible. If you close it, then the file gets deleted. And
I can assure you there's a temporary file somewhere called
"kdeprint_...",
the problem is to locate it.

I've contacted kwrite developers and they'll check it. They told me
they solved a lot of printing problems in the 3.1 release (out beginning
of January), so it's possible that your problem is already fixed.

Michael.

Ok- so what do I need to do next?
In the x terminal when I open it after giving the root password

linux:/home/frybyte #find ~/.kde/ -name kdeprint_\*

Which by the way I can't seem to paste from the clipboard directly into the
xterminal
Also the tilde looks wrong in the xterminal but I have been careful to make
sure that I have typed it correctly

the response I get?
bash: find~/.kde/-name: no such file or directory

the entire time I'm doing this the document is in preview and I'm looking
at it.

So what am I doing wrong?

Yeah but where's this file you say exists?

2 things:
1) don't use copy'n paste, type the command directly at the terminal
prompt. As you can see from the error message you got, all spaces
have been removed.
2) don't do this as root. Indeed, the temporary file is located in
the current user home directory, that's why I use "~/.kde/" as
base search directory (the tilde stands for the user home dir).
Now if you switch to root when searching, then the tilde will
points you to root's home directory, not to the home dir of the
user that has created the temporary file. In summary, do the search
as the same user as the one that is trying to print the doc.

Michael.

I didn't use copy and paste it didn't work. However I may not be sensing
the spaces.

So I used KONSOLE and then Linux Console and did it from where I was in the
process so not root.
I typed in the sentence and tried various ways with various spaces- and at
least it doesn't respond with no such file or directory all it does it give
me a new command line.
Next idea? The space thing was why I was trying to copy it directly from
your email into the console but if that can't work just to make sure could
you send me the command and put [space] where they belong. It's the only
way to be certain that I'm typing it correctly.
Also I was looking directly at the print preview while doing all of this.

the current user home directory, that's why I use &quot;~/.kde/&quot;
as<br>
base search directory (the tilde stands for the user home dir).<br>
Now if you switch to root when searching, then the tilde will<br>
points you to root's home directory, not to the home dir of the<br>
user that has created the temporary file. In summary, do the search<br>
as the same user as the one that is trying to print the doc.<br>
</font></blockquote><br>
So I used KONSOLE and then Linux Console and did it from where I was in
the process so not root.<br>
I typed in the sentence and tried various ways with various spaces-&nbsp;
and at least it doesn't respond with no such file or directory all it
does it give me a new command line.<br>
Next idea?&nbsp; The space thing was why I was trying to copy it directly
from your email into the console but if that can't work just to make sure
could you send me the command and put [space] where they belong.&nbsp;
It's the only way to be certain that I'm typing it correctly.<br>
Also I was looking directly at the print preview while doing all of
this.<br>

I was never able to resolve this 'bug' using KDE at all and ended up going over to the 'otherside' i.e. GNOME.
I did have to do some shifting in CUPS to get GNOME printing to work but mostly all I did was respond to the questions.
So I still don't know why this couldn't work- but alas I gave up.

Three years old. Abandoned by reporter. Never reproduced. KWrite changed completely in the meantime. I believe it's safe to close it as invalid and let it be reopened if anybody else reproduces it.
