Description david 2002-10-29 15:12:09 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.0.8)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages

Hi,

I've been having this problem since probably kde 2.x, but possibly only 3 - not entirely sure.

anyhow, what happens is this:
after being logged in for a while (sometimes a day, sometimes a few days) and having been constantly locking and unlocking my machine, screensavers coming on and such - suddenly I can no longer lock my screen, and the screen savers don't come on.

Its just like it ignores me when I click the lock button (or the lock screen menu item).

I found that if I killed kdestop and reran it, all would work again. But thats just a hack work around :0

I've had this problem on many (atleast 10) different kde installs (currently using 3.1beta) on atleast 3 different machines, running debian and gentoo. Some guy on #kde mentions he also has the problem (debian).

Cheers
David

when you have the problem next time, try:
dcop kdesktop KScreensaverIface lock

Do you have always the same screensaver or random?
Comment 2 david 2002-10-29 19:44:27 UTC
The screenaver is set to random.

Next time it locks I'll try the dcop command and try changing it out of
random..

Thanks.

Hi,

The 'dcop kdesktop...' command appears to not work either.

did you get any output from kdesktop (probably in $HOME/.xsession-errors)?
Comment 5 david 2002-11-13 06:46:27 UTC
oops! I didn't check, and just as I was coming back here to add some more
comments after another none-working thing, i already did a work around.

Anyhow, some more info:

It seems when it refuses to launch there is already a process runnign (ps ax |
grep kdesktop) called "kdesktop-lock"... Though it doesnt appear to be doing
anything... Maybe a rouge process from the last screen saver that didn't die?..
If I kill that process the screen savers work again.

Now, another thing (which is probably totally unrelated): If i lock the screen
and right away start moving the mouse and type stuff on the keyboard, the
"enter your password" dialog comes up before the screensaver. the screensaver
then comes up, but it doesnt have keyboard / mouse focus! I have to switch to
terminal one and kill it manually, oops! ;-). - Want me to add another bug for
that?

I'll let you know once I get more info on this.

Thanks again,
David

I see this and "Bug 42003: locking the desktopn is not possible" on my system.
Redhat 8.0 (KDE 3.0.3-8.3 Red Hat). None of the work arounds work for me. There
is no /usr/bin/kdesktop_lock running which I can kill. If I run "kdesktop
--forcelock", i get following output :

kdesktop: Unknown option '--forcelock'.
kdesktop: Use --help to get a list of available command line options.

There is no $HOME/.xsession-errors so apparently no errors.
I also tried changing the random screen saver to something different but that
doesnt work either. ScreenSaver isnt activated.

Also, my desktop wallpaper is not displayed. The default background is displayed
instead.

All three problems i.e. can't lock, no SS and no wallpaper appeared after a few
days of installation. After they appeared, initially, they used to work after i
logged out of kde and then did a "startx" again. Later they didnt work after
re-login and worked only after I rebooted the machine ! Now they dont work even
after reboots ! Some strange problem this is !
