Version: (using KDE KDE 3.0.3) Installed from: RedHat RPMs OS: Linux Somehow when I handtype an URL to galeon under KDE it will cause KDE panel to become sluggish (panel and panel operations will be unresponsive and slow). To detect this problem: 1) enable automatic hide of panel and set delay to 0 seconds; 2) verify that when moving mouse cursor to and from KDE panel it will hide and show itself instantly; 3) launch galeon; 4) verify that when moving mouse cursor to and from KDE panel it will hide and show itself instantly; 5) type an URL (example galeon.sourceforge.net) and press [enter]; 6) verify that when moving mouse cursor to and from KDE panel it does not hide and show itself instantly; You should experience total slowdown of panel and all operations there should be terribly slow. Termination of this instance of galeon is the cure. Currently I run RedHat 8.0 but this happened even with RedHat 8.0 betas: [IS@sarmax IS]$ rpm -qa|grep galeon galeon-1.2.6-0.8.0 rpm -qa|grep kde [IS@sarmax IS]$ rpm -qa|grep kde kdepasswd-3.0.3-3 kdebase-3.0.3-13 kdenetwork-devel-3.0.3-3 kde-i18n-Chinese-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-German-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Norwegian-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Slovenian-3.0.3-1 kdebindings-devel-3.0.3-1 kdepim-pilot-3.0.3-3 kdemultimedia-devel-3.0.3-4 kdeartwork-locolor-3.0.3-3 kdeaddons-knewsticker-3.0.3-1 kdesdk-kmtrace-3.0.3-2 kde-i18n-Danish-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Hungarian-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Portuguese-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Turkish-3.0.3-1 kdebindings-kdec-3.0.3-1 kdeartwork-kworldclock-3.0.3-3 kdegames-3.0.3-3 kdemultimedia-libs-3.0.3-4 kdessh-3.0.3-3 kdeaddons-kicker-3.0.3-1 kdeartwork-screensavers-3.0.3-3 kdesdk-kapptemplate-3.0.3-2 kdesdk-kompare-3.0.3-2 kde-i18n-British-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Czech-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Finnish-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Hebrew-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Japanese-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Polish-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Serbian-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Swedish-3.0.3-1 kdeadmin-3.0.3-3 kdebindings-qtc-3.0.3-1 kdegames-devel-3.0.3-3 kdetoys-3.0.3-1 unixODBC-kde-2.2.2-3 lockdev-1.0.0-20 kdelibs-3.0.3-8 kdemultimedia-kfile-3.0.3-4 kdepim-3.0.3-3 kdeartwork-3.0.3-3 kdebase-devel-3.0.3-13 kdesdk-kbabel-3.0.3-2 kdesdk-kspy-3.0.3-2 kdelibs-devel-3.0.3-8 kde-i18n-Brazil-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Chinese-Big5-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Estonian-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Greek-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Italian-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Norwegian-Nynorsk-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Russian-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Spanish-3.0.3-1 kdeaddons-kate-3.0.3-1 kdebindings-kmozilla-3.0.3-1 kdebindings-kdejava-3.0.3-1 kdesdk-gimp-3.0.3-2 licq-kde-1.2.0a-2 wordtrans-kde-1.1pre9-10 lockdev-devel-1.0.0-20 kdemultimedia-arts-3.0.3-4 kdeaddons-konqueror-3.0.3-1 kdesdk-kbugbuster-3.0.3-2 kde-i18n-Afrikaans-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Dutch-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Icelandic-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Romanian-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Ukrainian-3.0.3-1 kdebindings-qtjava-3.0.3-1 kde2-compat-2.2.2-7 kdenetwork-libs-3.0.3-3 kdeutils-laptop-3.0.3-3 switchdesk-kde-3.9.8-9 kdepim-devel-3.0.3-3 kdevelop-2.1.3-3 kde-i18n-Catalan-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-French-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Korean-3.0.3-1 kde-i18n-Slovak-3.0.3-1 kdebindings-3.0.3-1 kdepim-cellphone-3.0.3-3 kdeaddons-noatun-3.0.3-1 [IS@sarmax IS]$ rpm -qa|grep mozilla mozilla-dom-inspector-1.0.1-26 mozilla-1.0.1-26 mozilla-nss-1.0.1-26 mozilla-nss-devel-1.0.1-26 mozilla-chat-1.0.1-26 mozilla-mail-1.0.1-26 mozilla-psm-1.0.1-26 kdebindings-kmozilla-3.0.3-1 mozilla-devel-1.0.1-26 mozilla-nspr-1.0.1-26 mozilla-nspr-devel-1.0.1-26 mozilla-js-debugger-1.0.1-26 [IS@sarmax IS]$ http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93973 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=75782
when entering a URL into galeon what does top (or any CPU monitoring tool, e.g. gkrellm, ksim, ksysmonitor, ksysguard, etc..) show? does the cpu usage jump to 100%? do any other applications slow down, or just the panel? if just the panel, is the entry for galeon in the taskbar flickering a lot or do you notice any other odd behaviour?
Depending of an site Galeon will jump to 25% of CPU usage but during the typing of an URL there is not much of it. During the typing: http://www.vendomar.ee/~ivo/handtype_load.png After an [Enter]: http://www.vendomar.ee/~ivo/handtype_load_after_enter.png It is hard to tell if the Galeon entry in the taskbar is flickering as the taskbar is hidden during the typing of the URL, but after I disabled the hide, there was no flickering and the panel operations (clicking on a RedHat will not bring menu up for about 2 seconds, same goes to icon shortcuts on taskbar, icon hightlighting does not work, ...) do indicate there is a problem even without the automatic hide.
So noone can confirm it or what is the deal? I have this issue with every RedHat 8.0 I have ever installed or used, so this must be a common problem.
hm.. do you have klipper enabled? and if so, do you have clipboard syncronization turned on in it? if so, this may be the problem and try turning off clipboard sync to see if it improves the situation. if not, i would guess that this is a Red Hat 8 issue rather than a KDE issue. Red Hat has made some unique alterations to the desktop software bundled with Red Hat 8 and you may be better served by entering a bug into their bug system rather than here.
How do I check if I have klipper enabled? And how to enable/disable it? At least no task with klipper name is running: [root@sarmax root]# ps -aux|grep klipper root 1289 0.0 0.0 3332 376 pts/1 R 08:47 0:00 grep klipper [root@sarmax root]#
Ok, I found klipper and I am certain it is the source of the problem as when to remove it, I can use Galeon again.

I have experienced this same bug with RedHat 8.1 beta3(phoebe3). It is very annoying.
*** Bug 54039 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
I don't seem to have this problem anymore even with both galeon and klipper operating. I've tried to duplicate the above process and klipper and the panel seem to function as they should. I'm currently running:- nic@thunder:~$ dpkg --list kdebase | grep ii ii kdebase 3.2.1-1 KDE Base metapackage nic@thunder:~$ dpkg --list klipper | grep ii ii klipper 3.2.1-1 KDE Clipboard
