Description Ivan Kozik 2002-09-28 16:59:18 UTC
Version:            (using KDE Devel)
Installed from:    Compiled sources
OS:          Linux

A small suggestion is to be able to middle-click on a tab in Konqueror to close it. (mozilla-like behavior). It's easier than to reach for a key combination.

Two questions:
- How will/can an user find this? Visual/description on RMB menu?
- Is it consistent with other uses of MMB?
Comment 2 Eric Drechsel 2003-04-01 09:52:46 UTC
I use the MMB feature constantly in moz/phoenix/etc. It's great because it allows you
to close unfocused tabs in one click. there isn't any other use for MMB on the tab
bar, and it's a feature that many power users expect from tabs. I can't think of a
graceful way to document it outside of the online help or a toggle in the konqueror
options tho.

- How will/can an user find this? Visual/description on RMB menu?

1. Tip of the day at program startup.
2. Description in properties. (i.e. "Use middle mouse button to close tabs")
3. On tab context menu, show small icon of mouse with MMB highlighted against
the close tab entry.

- Is it consistent with other uses of MMB?

It is as far as other tabbed browsers I have used is concerned. It's one of
those things where once you've used it, it's hard going back (like the scroll
wheel).

Neither the Linux of Mozilla nor Firebird close the tab on middle click but
past the selection to load as URL. So does Konqueror now in HEAD.

I'm using double click on Linux all the time with Mozilla, Mozilla has configs
to control this:

Middle mouse prefs: true by default on Unix, false on other platforms.

user_pref("middlemouse.paste", false);
user_pref("middlemouse.contentLoadURL", false);
user_pref("middlemouse.scrollbarPosition", false);

I just see there is a "version" missing behind "Linux" in my comment 4 to make
it reasonable. :-) Konqueror/HEAD has now close buttons within tabs as quick
way to close tabs so no necessity to break the "middle mouse button=paste" Unix
paradigma.

Open/Close tabs are 2 of the most used functions, and thus need to be easily accessible. Compared to the little "X" square, the tab itself is a much bigger target and thus is much easier to be clicked on. Just imagine how much harder it would be to switch tabs if you have to click on a little square.

Since "middle mouse button=open in new tab", it is not unreasonable to have "middle mouse button=close tab". The "Unix paradigma" argument is not too convincing, as "middle mouse button=paste" does not work in either kicker taskbar or konsole tabs. "middle mouse button=paste" in a text entry widget is a consistent behavior, "middle mouse button=paste" in non text entry widget is not.

And as Dominik mentioned, Mozilla/Firefox do have the option to toggle this behavior, and Opera has it by default.

In my opinion, "middle click on tab load url" is not really useful, as you can always switch to the targetted tab and paste on either the location bar or any empty area of the page. On the other hand, "middle click close tab" will increase the usability as it makes closing tab, a much more frequent task than pasting url, much more easier.

Reopen the bug.. It's a horrible nasty travisty of a bug when something this important gets marked WONTFIX
Comment 9 Greg Diebel 2004-05-17 18:18:06 UTC
This bug needs to be reconsidered. The current solution of having a close tab button on the tabbar, or using close buttons on tabs as an option is insufficient. It doesn't make sense to have an option of either website icons or close buttons on tabs -- it would be better to have an easy way to close the tabs and yet have the convenience of website icons. As for the issues of consistency, I would refer to comments #7 and add that the behavior of mozilla/opera is to close tabs with MMB, and previous users of those browsers expect this behavior. The "middle click on tab load url" is simply not useful, nor is it consistent. I mean, think about it, how often do you actually use that feature? Please consider offering this feature as an option.

*** Bug 82957 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***

Oh that sucks :( I would love to use Konqueror because it's so much faster than Firefox (maybe it's GTK's fault, maybe it's Gecko's faults) but I feel there should be at least an option. It's no more "destructive" than highlighting the address bar, middle clicking sometime later and finding you've lost your page because of a middle click. I think Firefox does this better by allowing you to change loadURLonclick in about:config. At least give us the option, please!

hey voters,

bug  	 82957
is a reincarnation of this bug that will remain open, so you could transfer your votes to that bug, because this one is closed...
Comment 13 Alexander Rødseth 2008-01-30 12:12:05 UTC
Now both this bug and bug 82957 are closed, but closing tabs with the middle mousebutton doesn't work in konqueror for KDE 4. Should I open a new wish?
