Description Ami Setton 2002-09-23 06:16:41 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.0.3)
Installed from: Mandrake RPMs
OS: Linux

It would be nice (and Eudora-user-friendly) if there were keyboard shortcuts for at least the known mail folders (inbox, sent-mail)

In Eudora, the shortcuts were Ctrl-1 for Inbox and Ctrl-0 for Sent-Mail (Outbox in Eudora.) I'll suggest those as defaults.

I don't care so much about my other folders having shortcuts, though, but maybe others might.

i would like to add this:

there should not only be shortcuts to special folders, also there should be a way to focus the
folder list only by using the keyboard (what about people don't having a mouse?).

bye,
thomas

If you get focus to the Folder list (Tab to it?) you can use Ctrl+arrow keys to
move around, and then Ctrl+Space to select.

It would be great to have one keyboard shortcut that popped up the folder selection dialog (as with moving a message to a folder), and then you go straight to that folder. This would allow much easier keyboard-only access of folders.

I'd like to make some general comments about using kmail with the keyboard.

The folder selection box that appears when you press M, does work nicely with the keyboard.

However, it's a bit frustrating that it only selects some folders from the keyboard. I believe it doesn't jump to subfolders, only top level folders. Then you have to press down arrow to get to a subfoldr. Why not be able to type in the first letters of any folder to jump to it?

Another thing, when I am paging through my new mail using the keyboard, I often trip up over a couple of things.

It's great how you can press space to keep reading the new screen / new message. And it's nice that this cycles through all new mails.

But sometimes I hit a new mail that is several pages long, but I don't want to read. Either:

* I press space several times until the message is finished, then one last time to jump to the next message

* or I press N or left arrow to go to the next message in the same folder

* or I press Ctrl-Shift-+ to get to the next folder with new messages in it, but this doesn't cycle from the bottom of the folder list to the top.

This is fiddly: I have to consciously look at the folder list decide which key to press to skip to the next new message.

What I want is:

* keep Space for going through new messages a page at a time

* a new (preferably single) key for jumping to the next new message (where ever it is in the list of folders).

The other thing I find frustrating is navigating within folders. If I press Home / End / PgUp / PgDown, I'm never quite sure if it's going to scroll in the message or in the folder list. Maybe Home / End / PgUp / PgDown should be for in the message, and Ctrl-Home / Ctrl-End / Ctrl-PgUp / Ctrl-PgDown (or Shift?) should be for getting around the message list. Maybe Shift for the message list and Ctrl for the folder list?

And finally, I think searching and sorting messages could be made a lot smoother. I have some more suggestions:

* keyboard shortcuts for sorting by different columns... or a keyboard shortcut that pops up a list of sort options, each of which I can active by a single key (a bit like the Move message box?)... the latter would be nice as it would be very fast to jump between, say, sort by name, and sort by arrival (newest first)

* the search messages feature is great, but it's a bit funny having the focus appear in the text box at the right hand side... it means I have to press Shift-Tab twice to get back to the box which selects which column to search on. Would it be better to display the text boxes on the left and put the search columns on the right?

* also, because the search box displays its results in the same window, it means popping between the search results window and the messages... would it be possible to have something like the Zoom feature in pine, which would mean that just the matched messages would appear in the normal message list pane... but I guess this might be confusing for new users unless it could be made very clear that the view is zoomed, and how to unzoom

With attachments, there don't seem to be any easy shortcuts for viewing them, or for attaching to messages while composing. In fact for the current kmail I am using, the only way to attach a file is to open konqueror and drag the file into the compose window. Maybe there is something funny with my installation though.

With the auto-complete on the compose message To line, it is very odd to me that it auto-completes on lists of addresses. I should think it should only auto-complete one address at a time. Also, it seems to forget addresses I have typed rather too quickly (perhaps this is a preference setting, but I think a long memory should be default: text storage is cheap!).

Anyway, these are just my ideas and suggestions, I hope you find them useful. I'm sorry to put them all in one bug like this, perhaps useful sounding ones could be broken out into separate bugs.

I really like kmail, but I still find it slower and clumsier than pine. Mind you, I've got 8 years experience using pine!

Cheers and thanks for listening,
Matthew.

Oops, sorry my suggestion to use Shift-PgUp etc. is bad... Shift with a direction key should always be for extending a selection.

And another thing, when jumping to a new folder with Space, sometimes the message list is scrolled so that you can only see one new message at the very bottom of the list. When you use space or Ctrl-Shift-+ to jump to a folder with new messages, I think the default should be to show all the new messages that fit into the message pane, with of course the oldest new message selected. That way you can quickly see the From / Subject / Date for new messages before paging through them.

Great news: In KDE 3.4 it will be possible to assign a shortcut to a folder or subfolder!
