wtf? Did it eat my bug report? Re-reporting in case it has been really lost, otherwise sorry for spam: In Kontrollzentrum/Druckerverwaltung unter Eigenschaften/Allgemein stehen Druckername: Adresse: Beschreibung: Im Original steht f
Sorry, kann ich nicht nachvollziehen. Gemeint ist doch wohl eine URL, also eine Adresse. Sowas mit "Ort" wiederzugeben, versteht doch kein Mensch, falls er nicht das Original im Hinterkopf hat. Die normale

The report refers to the CUPS manual where we are told that "location" means the physical spot where the printing machine actually is. The German translation, however, speaks of an "address" which would be easily interpreted as "URL".) The main problem I see with changing the translation for the term "location" is the fact that it is taken from a central file (kdelibs.po) and is used in a lot of different places, namely: #: kabc/resourcefileconfig.cpp:47 kdeprint/kprintdialog.cpp:105 #: kdeprint/management/kminfopage.cpp:46 #: kdeprint/management/kmpropgeneral.cpp:40 kdeprint/management/kmwname.cpp:42 #: kio/kfile/kpropertiesdialog.cpp:823 kio/kfile/kurlrequesterdlg.cpp:47 This means: If I change the translation the new one will show up in _all_ these places. But I don't think that _all_ of these occurrences use "location" in the same meaning of "physical spot where the machine actually is". Some of them probably use "location" in a sense of "URL/URI". Until this nest of double meanings is somehow sorted out I'm afraid it will be best to leave the German translation the way it is. Maybe one of the CCed persons finds a better solution. Regards, Thomas
Ah, now I understand why this bug is especially troublesome to resolve. How about using: QString KLocale::translate ( const char *index, const char *fallback) It is exactly for the case this bug is about: [cite documentation] "The real contents of the string is in the argument fallback, but the meaning of it is coded into the argument index. In some cases you'll need this function, when english is too ambiguous to express it." However, this is not in the translators' realm, the developer has to use the relevant translation function. CCing the author of the cups printer dialog, Michael Goffioul.
Created attachment 473 [details] Proposed patch for fixing i18n issue in cups printer dialog This fixes the index string to be "Phys. Location" allowing a better translation of "Location:"
This sounds OK for me (actually, this is the only solution I can think of). Thomas, is this OK to commit?

I'd rather wait until 3.1 is tagged (yesterday was the last day for translation commits) and have it committed to HEAD and 3_1_BRANCH afterwards (that way the fix will be in 3.1.1 and onwards). Thanks, Thomas
