It would be nice if the "Structure Editor" could be open while working on
the presentation. Actually it is modal.

Thank you for your bug report. 
In the development version of KPresenter, the outline tab in the sidebar 
replaces the structure viewer. You can use it while editing the 
presentation. Just make sure to show the sidebar (menu View, Show 
Sidebar).
