Unrar does work perfectly. I have been using it as a substitute.
Ooh, it sounds like unrar is a hidden dependency to Ark. I don’t think I ever tried Ark after I installed unrar. Will try.

So, extraction seems to work in Ark with unrar installed, but notably progress hangs at 50% until extraction completes. Also, I feel that if unrar is a dependency it should be marked as such somehow, rather than giving the erroneous "wrong password or not enough space" error.
with the correct rar password, ark 23.04.2 gives a very misleading error message: Extraction failed. Make sure you provided the correct password and that enough space is available.
