Description sean 2002-08-15 14:20:49 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package:           kmail
Version:           1.4.2 (using KDE 3.0.2 )
Severity:          wishlist
Installed from:    Gentoo
Compiler:          gcc version 3.1
OS:                Linux (i686) release 2.4.19-gentoo-r7
OS/Compiler notes:

Hello

I think kmail composer comfort and convenience would be sharply improved if the mail signature didn't appear in the composer window. Here is my real world example:

I reply to a message inserting my response below particular blocks of quoted text. I invariably have lots of unneeded quoted text below my cursor when I'm done responding (their own signature plus my original quoted reply etc). To erase this stuff I'd like to:

a) hold shift key and press ctrl-end.
b) hit delete key.

Instead I have to:

a) hold shift key and press ctrl-end.
b) while holding shift key I cursor-up until my signature is no longer selected.
c) hit delete key.

This process grows increasingly cumbersome when one responds to nearly one hundred emails a day.

Thanks for your time!

I don't like this. I don't think that KMail should send anything else=20
than what you can see in the composer window. Also remember that you=20
can add and remove the signature in the composer window.

Another thing you might not be aware of: You can select certain parts=20
of a message before replying to it. Then only these selected parts=20
will be quoted in the reply.

This concern is not a compelling enough reason for sacrificing usability in=
 my=20
opinion. How about this: The signature as an uneditable component at the en=
d=20
of the message so when i hit ctrl-end it doesn't select my signature too?

Yeah I'd remember that about 0.5 seconds after I send the message :)

It shouldn't be uneditable. But we could think about making Ctrl+End=20
first stop before the signature and after the second Ctrl+End go to the=20
end of the editor. Similar to the smart Home in Kate. Any volunteers?

So can you live with binding "Append Signature" to a key shortcut of=20
your choice? In other words can we close this wish?

Ingo

This sounds very very good.

I was joking because I would forget to do this too often. Having to manual=
ly=20
enter a signature with a hotkey is not an acceptable solution. User=20
convenience is about decreasing the amount of keypressed required to one's=
=20
work not increasing them.=20

I think the submitter has a good Idea here.

By detaching the signature from the composer field, a few more options become available to the composer.

1) Multiple signatures could more easily be implemented, maybe in a pull-down menu at the bottom of the composer window.

2) A simple clickable checkmark box can be used to preview the selected signature within the body of the message for those that wish to see/edit everything being sent.

3) Vcards could also be used as signatures or optional attachments.

IMHO, Usage for both power email users and the majority of normal users, whether keyboard or mouse oriented, would not negatively impacted by this separation. The implied possibilities of the separation would increase the flexibility possible to users.

I agree with Louis, but I opt for visible and editable signature pane right away.

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.
Comment 8 Luigi Toscano 2012-08-19 01:08:55 UTC
Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2.
