Description bastiaf 2002-07-30 09:54:35 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: kwin
Version: KDE 3.0.2
Severity: wishlist
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
Compiler: gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (release)
OS: Linux
OS/Compiler notes: Not Specified

It is really annoying that new windows pop up for example because mozilla cannot load an URL. It would be really nice if the new window don't get the focus (optional).

Are you talking about all windows or about dialogs?

Hi,
I am not the original poster, but I see the same problem. I have such a problem with
kmail. I like the many shortcuts in kmail, but in my situation they can get really
annoying together with new windows and dialogs getting the focus.

Example 1: I am using one IMAP account using two mailers on two computers at the
same time. From time to time kmail cannot reach my IMAP server and tells me every
time. Every time I lose focus! Quite annoying if you try programming at the same time.

Example 2: Because of that, I quit and restart kmail quite often. However, as kmail
takes some time to get started (many mails, many large folders), I like to start it up,
type a little shell command or do some editing. But no! this is not possible, because if I
lose focus during typing, I start off quite a number of operations in kmail: shortcuts. "d"
is "delete" without any "really? ok/cancel" dialog, by the way.

I would propose (if at all possible) to try to recognize if the keyboard is in active use,
and to move focus only if the keyboard has not been used in the last 0.x seconds or
so...

Yes Yes Yes!!! I was just gonna request this when I found you already have done. It wont take 2 minutes to sick a few conditional statements in to only change focus if the keyboard has been inactive for a user-defined time (add it as an extra option in the control centre).

I'de help out and do it my self if I was familiar with the KDE source... I hope to be one day... :), But I'm busy with other things at the moment :(
