Description gcckain 2002-07-27 17:20:04 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: kde
Version: 3.0 (using KDE 3.0.0 )
Severity: normal
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
Compiler: gcc 2.95.3
OS: Linux
OS/Compiler notes: Suse 8.0

This is an annoying problem that has actually forced me to turn off all types of GUI effects except combo box animation.

When I tell kde to animate my menus (or fade) quite often at the very end of the animation process the menu will just disappear as if I clicked off of it. The cause seems to almost be random.

Also whenever I tell tooltips to fade or animate if I do anything during the small animation process such as press a key like "enter" in the terminal or click right on the offending tooltip on the pager as it's animating the mouse click or keypress is ignored. The mouse click will simply cause the tooltip to go away and not go to the virtual desktop that I chose and the keypress will do the same and never send ENTER to konsole. Similar bugs have occured with all of my software I use. This also can happen when I go to click the X at the top of a window to close it.

I notice that when tooltips don't animate they are never allowed to be underneath the mouse cursor and they reposition when you try. However they don't reposition when they are in the middle of animating. A good way to fix this would be to test the animating tooltip to see if the mouse comes over it and simply kill the tip or start it again somewhere else.

I will be forwarding this bug to Trolltech as their QEffects classes seem to block
any events that occur during an animate or fade. Thus, mouse clicks are lost and
tooltips are not hidden sometimes. There is nothing I can do directly in KDE to
workaround this issue, as it really is a Qt problem which I will follow up.

I have the same problems as the reporter describes in the second paragraph with
a recent CVS (CVS 20021106). If the menu effect is set to "animate" then context
menus just disappear. This happens randomly and in about 40% of all tries.
If you tell me that this is a different bug, then I will file it seperately.
This is very annoying, since you sometimes have to click three times to get a
context menu.

I also see problems with animated tooltips. If I move the mouse pointer off the "close
window" button in the moment when the tooltip is appearing, it gets stuck. It only
disappears if the mouse is moved over the same button again. The same happens
with the "minimize" and "maximize" buttons.
I have seen this bug already with KDE 3.0.2 / Qt 3.0.4 and now with KDE 3.1rc3 /
Qt 3.1, both compiled from sources (gcc version 2.95.3).

Can confirm second paragraph of comment #1 with KDE 3.2.3.

Is this bug still present in a recent version of KDE, such as 3.5.8 or KDE 4.0 RC 2?
Comment 6 George Goldberg 2008-02-18 03:35:23 UTC
Closing due to no response by reporter. Please reopen if this bug is still present in a recent version of KDE, such as 3.5.9 or 4.0.1
