Description Jesper Juhl 2002-07-27 12:53:39 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: kcontrol
Version: 3.0.6 (using KDE 3.0.6 CVS/CVSup/Snapshot)
Severity: wishlist
Installed from: Compiled sources
Compiler: gcc 2.95.3
OS: Linux
OS/Compiler notes: Slackware Linux

The Kontrol Center should provide an easy way for a user to save and reload a particular configuration.

Power users have no problem with just backing up the config files (and this should always be possible) but less advanced users will often not know how to do that. So the Kontrol Center should provide an option to "Save current settings as..." and then let the user enter a name for the current config (this should save /all/ settings changeable through Kontrol Center). The user could then save various favorite configurations and go about experimenting and always have the option to "Restore settings to..." and then select a previously saved configuration.

This would make it a lot easier/safer for new users to experiment with various settings in the kontrol center as they would always have a safe setting to return to.

Regards
Jesper Juhl

I think this is a feature planned for kde 3.3's kconfedit

Would be uberleet if temporal data was stripped of one branch of the configuration tree, for easy use of cvs or svn on say .kde/share/config, right now too much junk is in there, like visited pages the last time you looked at korganizer, etc making the use of a scm tool on these files painful at best.
Stuff that's not really configuration.

This should be referred to as "export" and "import" settings. this is the more exact definition, at least of what i would have loved to see available. This is useful for people who work on several machines and configure quite extensively their KDE's and need a fast "import" & "export" facilities to start working on another machine.

The idea is not bad, it could be a good feature of the new system settings in KDE4.

Hello! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this project has been unmaintained for many years so I am closing this bug. Kcontrol has been replaced by System Settings in Plasma. Please give the latest version of that a try, and open a new bug in "systemsettings" if you continue to have an issue. Thank you!
