(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***) Package: kwintv Version: 0.8.9 (using KDE 2.2.2 ) Severity: normal Installed from: SuSE Compiler: gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (SuSE) OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.18-4GB OS/Compiler notes: First time after reboot when clicking on the link to KWinTV it just changes the cursor flashes something on the kickker panel the cursor changes back to the default and acts as if nothing had happened. If I then go to the menu and select xawtv it starts. I can then close it even if it never got a picture to show and again select KWinTV it will now run correctly. I am running an ATI TVWonder card.I am impressed that you detected and ran it under any circumstances since ATI says it does not support Linux for this card. Just thought you would want to know that it appears xawtv is initializing something that KWinTV is missing. (Submitted via bugs.kde.org) (Called from KBugReport dialog)
Most likely the problem is that kv4lsetup is not install setuid root, or there is a bug in kv4lsetup. Please check the former. If the problem is the latter, you will most likely have to wait until the rewrite is complete. Such bugs will not likely be fixed by the developers on this old code.

Sorry, I'm new to Linux from Windows. Don't know what kv4lsetup is where it is or how to follow your advice. But, no problem I'm just a hobbyist enjoying the learning process. This is not major but, I do like to see how things work if I have time. The thing does work now by just making sure I run xawtv first and that is a lot better than I expected and I am finding a number of things I like about xawtv in the process.
This is a FAQ. You must find the kv4lsetup file on your system and make sure it is owned by "root" and has permissions 4711.
