Description Nicolas Brisset 2002-05-30 15:02:17 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: kmail
Version: 1.4.1 (using KDE 3.0.1 )
Severity: wishlist
Installed from: Mandrake Linux Cooker i586 - Cooker
Compiler: gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Mandrake Linux 8.2 2.96-0.76mdk)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.18-6mdk
OS/Compiler notes:

I enjoy kmail a lot and use it daily. I like to store important messages so that my ~/Mail/ folder has grown quite large now. I would like to be able to find all messages in a given date range (say from 1999) and put them in a given file (or on a CD for instance). The messages might be all together in the same archive folder or in a recursive directory structure reflecting the one they were in originally.
Then when I need to find an old mail I could add an archive main folder (toplevel in the listview ?) from the file that I'd select in a filedialog and it would appear side by side with the contents of ~/Mail/.

I am aware that this is probably non trivial but otherwise how can you prevent your home from growing indefinitely which sysadmins usually dislike :-) ?

I don't think this is a duplicate of 55827. 55827 addresses the problem of extracting messages for archiving from the existing folder tree. This wishlist item addresses how one can access an archive without modifying the existing ~/Mail directory. It thus addresses the opposite side of the coin: retrieval rather than storage.

Being able to access a saved copy of ~/Mail (or something else with the same structure) without modifying ~/Mail would be extremely useful. It would enable one to save the ~/Mail folder to a CD, say, and then later look at the contents of that CD to retrieve ancient messages. An option for read-only access to such auxiliary mail folders would probably be needed.

The natural interface for this facility would be an alternative to "Local Folders" at the top level of the folder tree.

I hope that this wishlist item is given serious consideration.
