(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: knewsticker
Version: v0.2 (using KDE 2.9.0 7 (3.0 rc1))
Severity: normal
Installed from: compiled sources
Compiler: gcc version 3.0.1
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.8-26mdk
OS/Compiler notes:

Hi

KNewsTickers downloads news only from some sites (currently it downloaded only rss file from http://www.root.cz/rss and failed to download rdf (as well as some rss) files from eg. TheRegister Kuro5hin and others.

Further more manually selecting "Check news" misbehaves and sometimes (eg. with Root prompt) opens konqueror window with one of the articles downloaded from www.root.cz (the only news on ticker scrolled).

I don't know it this is connected with the fact that knewsticker sometimes stays gray upon startup.

But at least (mis)behaviour of the "Check news" menu is new to me. :-))

Cheers
Lada

This behaviour was caused by a patch which is supposed to fix cyrillic sites.
It seems as the fix makes the XML reader barf or more input files though :-(

Noticed that behaviour investigating.

Me neither but I think it's the cyrillic fix which makes KNewsTicker stay
gray if no newsources of them all could be read.

Thanks for the note. :-)

Please update and check again. I hope I just fixed both bugs.

Sorry bad news. :-))

Almost everything now works OK but for=20
a) Root prompt
http://www.rootprompt.org/rss/
No articles are downloaded manually selecting "Check news" launches konque=
ror=20
window with one of the articles displayed in ticker.

b) Penguin.cz
http://www.penguin.cz/rss.php3?rdf=3D2=20
(rss)
OR
http://www.penguin.cz/rss.php3?rdf=3D1
(rdf)

I was asked by webmaster of this site to test this in news ticker I cannot=
=20
guarantee those files are OK. But the behaviour is the same as with Root=20
prompt.
No headlines downloaded and manual "Check news" launches up konqueror.

Also entering http://www.penguin.cz/rss.php3?rdf=3D2 in "Add..." and selec=
ting=20
"Suggest" disables the whole window and waits for a very long time. All the=
=20
controls in the window stay disabled but after some time the window can be=
=20
closed with ESC.
But I repeat I do not know if the files recieved are well-formed.

All other sites I use (TheRegister KDE.org Kuro5hin Root.cz etc.) work O=
K.=20
For Root.cz ISO-8859-2 chars are displayed OK.

Should you need my assistence eg. testing feel free to ask.

Thanks again for your time and effords. I appreciate it.

Cheers
Lada

PS: cvs up fetched one new file common/xmlnewsaccess.cpp
I recompiled knewsticker only (not libkdenetwork or other files from=20
kdenetwork). kdelibs and kdebase are today morning versions.

That file is invalid XML. One of the headlines ("C (The Book)") has a
description which contains '&' (that should be '&'). I cannot do much
about that it's the webmaster's fault. :-/

These two above files are incredibly broken. If you have KDE at hand you can
use the utility 'xmllint' to check files for their XML validity. Just run
xmllint on one of the above files to see all the errors.

Ok :-)

I appreciate your cooperation your feedback is very very valueable to me :-)

Odd. knewsticker.cpp should have changed as well. Ah well perhaps that's just
a slow server again.

I'll try to get in touch with them and ask them to correct this.
