Have you tried a recent KDE release to see if the results are what you are wanting? Transparent backgrounds in Konsole should be updated when the desktop background is updated.

Do you have the ability to load .jpeg images in KDE? The background images are in .jpeg so that would result in them not showing up. In Konsole->Settings->Configure->Schema does the background show up in the preview area? I have the feeling this is distro related.
This old bug has been resolved somewhere between version 1.1 and ... 1.5.2 (with the respective kde version). I'm just asking myself, why has not it been marked as resolved before ?
