it would be nice if somewhere either in the 
properties menu or the link itself of a 
shortcut on the desktop to a device such as 
a cdrom could show the volume label of the 
device.

Would it be possible to add this to the new kio_media ?

KDE 3.5.2 from Fedora5 has this behavior.

Indeed kio media provides this feature for a while now.
