Description davidhj 2001-12-17 13:46:26 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: konsole
Version: 1.0.2 (using KDE 2.2.2 )
Severity: wishlist
Installed from: SuSE
Compiler: gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (SuSE)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.4-4GB
OS/Compiler notes:

Because it is difficult to have keyboard shortcuts in konqueror it would be nice to have very friendly mouse actions. I would like the session buttons in the toolbar to have a RMB context menu corresponding to the "Sessions" menu - i.e. rename send signal.

If there is any way to have a keyboard shortcut for "New session" that would be great. But I appreciate the difficulty of doing this.

best wishes
David

Hey great!

Gosh I had been using Konsole for several months and I never knew that. Do
you think having "File->New session" with the key binding listed would help
users take advantage of this feature?

Anyway thanks for a great console app.

It's there since KDE 2.2.0 and definable as "newSession" in Keytabs files.

The shortcut might depend on what keytab file your current session uses. Ad-
ditionally "New"/shortcut starts a new session of type you last selected in
KDE 3. So where should it be displayed in menu when it's subject to change?

Well

1. This is an underlying issue which I can't comment on. I do think a real
strong point of KDE is the fact that in almost all apps you go to settings
and there are "Configure key bindings" "Configure toolbars" "Configure <app
name>". This makes for a really uniform interface. But if you have good
reasons to use a different system and if reading key bindings from the
keytab into the menu text would be a big programming job then fair enough.

2. I don't think that's so important. Presumably you're still gonna have the
"New button" and the same would apply to this. I would just put it in File.

But the underlying thing is there was a great feature but I never used it.
I know I should have read the docs but realistically most people just want
to open a terminal and get cracking.

If you can't add something (e.g. a tooltip) to inform users of the keyboard
shortcut maybe there is a way to make it easily guessable.
I think I found out about shift-left arrow and shift-right arrow by
experimenting. "There must be a way to move left and right... hmm not Ctrl
not Alt... oh shift works". If the new button was the same as the left and
right keys that would make it easy to guess. I know you couldn't use
shift+N; could you have
alt+left arrow
alt+right arrow
alt+N
? Or are these key combinations used by a common terminal app?

Still, the original wish remains not implemented (that is, of Konsole 1.2.1 on 3.1.4 libs). And what I'm referring to is the context menu on toolbar session buttons. It would certainly be more useful to have the context menu of the session instead of the one for toolbar on them. And that way an option could be added to configuration dialog for RMB on the terminal always to send it to the terminal and never open context menu (as one could reach it through the toolbar). That feature should obviously turn itself off once both toolbar and menu are disabled in case there is no other way to turn it back than restart konsole and/or edit config files.

Unless it's all added in CVS (or a version later than 1.2.1) I hereby ask to reopen this bug.
