Description maarizwan 2001-12-17 06:08:22 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: konqueror
Version: 2.2 (using KDE 2.2.2 -1)
Severity: normal
Installed from: Red Hat Linux 7.2
Compiler: gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-98)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.3-12
OS/Compiler notes:

Here are some very annoying 'undo' action related bugs / unexpected behaviors. Please add/enable the 'undo' action in the toolbar (by configure toolbars) so that you can observe it easily.

A. Lack of intimation regarding undo:
   1. Open Home Folder
   2. Rename a file
   3. press Ctrl+Z or undo toolbar button (if present/enabled)
   4. the user is not prompted or confirmed about the restoration of the last name.

   [expectation]
Konqueror should do any or all of the following:

     a. Show a dialog with "Do you want to restore <filename> with <oldFileName>?" and also "don't show this message again!" checkbox.

     b. The status bar should show message: 'Undo: <filename> has been restored to <oldFileName>'

     c. the file should remain 'selected' and when mouse is hoverd on it a tooltip should show 'Undo: renamed from <oldFileName> to <currentfilename>'

     d. when the user views 'properties' the rename/copy/move related
undo/redo information be displayed too.

I request that konqueror be more verbose and it should use 'Sounds' to denote restoration/undo action.

B. Lack of Undo history in konqueror:

   1. open home folder
   2. rename a file
   3. you can see the 'undo' toolbar action is enabled
   4. Now open another instance of home folder (click on home icon on the taskbar)
   5. the 'undo' toolbar action is disabled

   [unexpected]
   1. if the user renames a file
   2. then quickly closes the konq. window
   3. suddenly s/he remembers that it was a mistake (renaming)
   4. s/he want to restore the filename back by
   5. opening home folder and pressing Ctrl+Z.
   6. but to their despair s/he can't restore the filename back :(

   [expectation]
    1. ".desktop" (or any file) entry should include a [undo_history] block

    2. where list of undo actions be stored which can be read by other
instances of konq.

    3. konq. can have an option like 'clear undo/redo history'

C. File deletion related undo trouble:

   1. open home folder
   2. delete a file say 'core'
   3. you'll be prompted with 'Delete confirmation dialog box'
   4. but you may not be able to restore the file

I agree that the user knows what s/he really wants delete it or trash but shouldn't we expect that mistakes are possible by even the super-users and the not so smart users are very prone to do this kind of silly mistakes since delete means mostly for them as 'send to recycle bin'. So

   [Expectation]
   1. To help the user not to mistakenly delete important files
   2. when files are deleted it should be prompted that
   3. 'Would you like to send the files to trash so that it can be restored later? if you delete this/these files you may not able to restore it.' with options
           'i would always use trash'
'no i want to delete it'
and with a check box option
'don't ask this question []" and
                 'don't ask delete confirmation'

   4. I agree that this will bother the user for the first time but

   5. the user can disable this option (of moving files to trash instead of delete).

   6. I believe this feature might save important files deleted by mistake.

   7. if the user 'prefers trash to delete' then the deleted files can be restored

   8. and if the user 'prefers delete to trash' and presses ctrl+Z or undo action button

   9. konq. should prompt "Unable to restore deleted file(s) <file list>; in future if you want deleted files to be restored then you can enable 'prefer trash to delete option in konqueror'! enable it? (yes/no)?"

Thanks!

This report is invalid since it contains more than one independent issue.
Reports are only allowed to contain one issue each, otherwise the management
of open reports is unnecessarily complicated. If you happen to be still able
to reproduce one or some of those issues using the latest KDE version then
please report each of them in separate reports and describe how others can
reproduce it. Thanks for your cooperation. [dg]
