Are you aware of the fact that it is configurabe for every account 
seperately to store the password in the config file?

Yes I am and yes both accounts have that option checked.

Do you possibly have no write access to ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc for 
example because you ran KMail once as root?

That wasn't it but I figured out more looking at kmailrc.  When I first ran Kmail after installing md8.1 and was setting up the accounts I got stuck with a no-name first account (i think it was there before maybe from the installation wizard where you select kmail as your main email program and it asks some info for it).  I was unable to remove that account (it would say Cannot find account) so I thought it was suposed to be there and added my accounts after it. But in keditrc I saw:

[Account 1]
Folder=inbox
Name=
Type=pop
auth=AUTO
check-exclude=false
check-interval=0
host=pop-server
leave-on-server=false
login=bmorris3
passwd=
port=110
precommand=
protocol=0
store-passwd=false
use-ssl=false
use-tls=false

This is the account that was not saving the password (notice the account is incomplete too no name etc). I removed this from keditrc and re-ran kedit and... problem fixed.

Actually it should not be possible in KMail 1.3.1 to create an account without 
name. However in earlier versions that was possible. Did you upgrade or make 
a new installation?
Just curious: Of what setup wizard are you talking? Is there a setup wizard 
from Mandrake where you can configure KMail? I don't run Mandrake though.

I did a new installation while keeping perevious linux user accounts.  When I installed I deleted .kde to get fresh prefs.

Mandrake 8.1 has this new feature where a configuration wizard runs for an account at first login.  If memory serves part of it tried to get me to register mandrake and it asked for me to select my prefered mail program (kedit) and supply my smtp server so it could send the info.  This might be where the no-named account was created?

I don't know if you also entered a pop3 server. Well you can try it again 
with a new user and eventually report it to Mandrake then.
At least I think this issue can be closed since I don't believe that 
creating nameless accounts is possible with KMail 1.3.1.
