phonon backend vlc 0.8, and gstreamer backend just play sound and shows thumbnail, 
if you use backend vlc 0.6.2, preview  works but when video finish information panel shows last frame and thumbnail.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.open dolphin
2.select video
3.play on information panel

Actual Results:  
does not play video just sound

Expected Results:  
play video

it works wheezy kde 4.8 dolphin but kde 4.14 not

Thanks for the bug report! This looks like it might be bug 337033 and/or bug 337107?
