Description Andreas Leidner 2001-09-08 14:53:29 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: kio-http
Version: KDE 2.2.0
Severity: normal
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
Compiler: Not Specified
OS: Linux
OS/Compiler notes: SuSE Linux 7.2 with KDE updated to version 2.2 using the compiled rpms available on www.suse.de

I've updated my SuSE Linux 7.2 system with the RPM binary packages available at the SuSE website ( http://www.suse.de/de/support/download/LinuKS/i386/update_for_7_2/index.html ). I downloaded all of them and installed them with rpm. The updated KDE runs fine though Konqueror and every other KDE application (and Mozilla too) using an internet connection takes about 30 to 60 seconds to connect to a host. Also after resolving the DNS name downloading images etc. is incredibly slow. This wasn't the case with KDE/Konqueror 2.1.2 and still isn't with non-KDE applications like Netscape 4.7.x.

Can you check if this might be related to IPv6? Could you check if disabling
kernel support for IPv6 makes a difference?

Cheers

I'd rather not do so - I'm not an experienced Linux user I've just recently
installed Linux and encountered the problem in the wake of updating from
KDE 2.1.2 to KDE 2.2.0. Thus I can't imagine why this should be related to
the kernel... (though I must admit I've really no knowledge about this)

Perhaps I should clarify the problem: The internet connection itself i.e.
the download speed is *not* slow with KDE apps but KDE apps (only KDE apps
and Mozilla) need significantly more time just to resolve the servers' names.
Once the name's resolved (at least it seems so to me) the downloading of
mail news or a website is as fast as it was with KDE 2.1.2. However the
Opera webbrowser for example hasn't shown this problem.

Regards
Andreas

SuSE?)

In KDE 2.2 we start to use IPv6 and that seems to cause some problems with
name resolution. You can test this by editing /etc/modules.conf and
commenting out the line that reads
  alias net-pf-10 ipv6
(Do you have such a line?)

If you then restart your system you should see a significant improvement in
name lookups.

That seems to indicate that it is a name server lookup problem caused by
KDE's use of IPv6.

Rather not I work for SuSE Inc. in the U.S. :-)

Yes I have such a line and I commented it out and restarted the system.
Unfortunately the problem isn't solved. :-(
Now I've uncommented the line again as it didn't make any difference to me.

Thanks for your help anyway

Hello,

This is no longer applicable since in the current version of KDE (3.x) IPv6 support is handled a
bit more intelligently. There is also a configure option to turn this feature off/on or set it to
morem hence it is upto the distributors to resolve this issue.

So where can I find this option (on/off IPv6) in KDE?
