Description sd1324 2001-09-01 18:49:28 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: konqueror
Version: KDE 2.2.0
Severity: normal
Installed from: Compiled From Sources
Compiler: gcc version 2.95.3
OS: Linux
OS/Compiler notes: Not Specified

If your bookmarks are empty and you add the bookmark toolbar to konqueror it shows up to the right of the location bar. This is precisely where I want the bookmark toolbar to be located. I added 3 folders with multiple bookmarks per folder and the location of the bookmark toolbar stayed the same. After several days of use (without any changes to the bookmarks) the bookmark toolbar moved below the location bar. No ammount of dragging and dropping will get it back to the right of the location bar. If I delete all my bookmarks and restart konqueror the empty bookmark toolbar is once again located to the right of the location bar?

same sort of bug in the location bar... in this window, it's beside the main
toolbar. in another window, it was there at one point, but now it's below, and
the darn thing won't go back...
Comment 4 Nick Pietraniec 2002-12-03 01:20:20 UTC
this is because in the history... If you drop down the location bar... You
will see an URL in there that is very long. This very long url makes the
location bar want to be as big as possible... Hence it falls below where it can
be longer.

The location toolbar should conform to it's position no matter how big the URL is.

That's my theory anyway. Can anyone confirm?
Comment 5 Chani 2002-12-03 02:48:04 UTC
yeah, that seems to be it. a very evil thing- the way I have it set up, even a
normal length url can force the location bar down. especially with the icon
bugs. and konqueror has decided to make new windows pretty small now, for some
reason- it used to make them huge before...
maybe because I told it to stop showing that welcome screen thingy...

This is still happening with KDE_3_1_BRANCH as of 26 Jan. 2003.
I first had the main bar and the location bar on the same row, with the
main bar on the left. Then, I quit konq. and started it again.
Now the bars occupied separate rows. I enlarged the window
to the previous size (when it worked), and still nothing. Then,
I made it larger, and location moved up to the same row as the main
bar where it should be. I repeated this procedure; each time I started
konq. I had to make the window a little bit larger than previous before
it would work. Now I'm completely maximized and have nowhere else to
go! (and the toolbars occupy different rows).

umm... this is konqi/kde/toolbars rather than anything
to do bookmarks so could you revert this change?, or is
there reasons (e.g, its actually a bug in the bookmark
code) for making the move?

A long URL in location bar no causes this problem in KDE 3.20.
Comment 9 Mary Ellen Foster 2004-06-22 13:35:42 UTC
I still see this bug in KDE 3.2.3; I hadn't thought of the "long URL" issue -- I thought it was just a random thing -- but that makes sense.
Comment 10 Verdi March 2004-07-29 09:28:56 UTC
For a quickfix: open ~/.kde/share/config/konq_history, and delete everything in section [Location Bar]
Comment 11 Jonas Bofj 2004-09-10 09:47:18 UTC
The user workaround to just have one toolbar in Konqueror is to use the Location toolbar only, and hide the Main one in Settings / Toolbars. The other way around (which is more logical!) does not work!

This behaviour is a bit wierd for most users, and has been consistent through KDE 2.2 to 3.3. It would be nice to clean it up a little bit.
Comment 12 Patrick 2006-02-06 16:31:24 UTC
The bug is still there, in KDE 3.5.1. I'd really like my toolbars staying where I put them, and not move around because there is an over-long URL in the location history. The quickfix from Verdi March removes functionality (there is a reason why we have the location history ;) ).

crazy that this bug resited that long. would be nice if it could be fixed until kde 4 :-P

Come September, we should get together and throw a 5 year birthday party for this bug. I'm still getting bitten by it.
Comment 15 Patrick 2006-07-22 09:07:33 UTC
Me too. Every time there is a long URL, I have to delete my history, otherwise my layout gets messed up. ANNOYING!

Party on! :)

This bug is a shamefull testament to how workarounds allow bugs like this go forever. I wish I could "lock" the toolbars in the ways similar to Kicker's.

Workaround to force location field into the Main toolbar:

To add Location Bar to Main Toolbar it's needed first to remove it from location toolbar.

This still happends in konq in kde 3.5.5

After having the "Main Toolbar" and the "Location Toolbar" on the same line for 1 month they randomly got reverted to spanning two lines today, no matter how i try to drag them on the same line they refuse to. This is not the first time this has happened.
Comment 18 Patrick 2006-12-13 16:40:21 UTC
Marius: deleting the history (right click on the address bar, the menu entry at the bottom) will fix it, until you open a URL that is longer than the bar itself - it will screw your layout again...

Nevertheless, amount of votes and the ridiculous age of this bug should really tell the devs how much of a PITA this is.
Comment 19 Martin Fitzpatrick 2008-04-05 20:41:02 UTC
Is this bug still present? Can't reproduce on Konq/4.0.3/Kubuntu. Thanks.
Comment 20 Dario Andres 2009-05-02 01:13:15 UTC
Here using:

Qt: 4.5.1 (qt-copy 958974)
KDE: 4.2.71 (KDE 4.2.71 (KDE 4.3 >= 20090428))
kdelibs svn rev. 960693 / kdebase svn rev. 960693
on ArchLinux i686 - Kernel 2.6.29.1

I can't reproduce this bug
Moving the booksmarks toolbar to the right of the location bar (which it has it's own toolbar and it is default on KDE4), and adding some bookmarks while having long URLs in the history doesn't move the toolbars to different positions
