Description Graeme Hewson 2012-09-14 08:17:20 UTC
I have an AC-powered desktop machine which I sleep overnight. Occasionally, after resuming, the popup notification "The screen is being locked" stays on the screen permanently, and the only way I've found to get rid of it is to restart KDE. This problem was reported by someone else with a laptop (bug 304706).

I never normally see the message, so there's no point displaying it, that I can see. It would be a good workaround to the problem if the message were never displayed. Using grep, I can see it's built into /usr/lib/libpowerdevilcore.so.0.1.0. I think it would be better if it could be configured (i.e., disabled) through System Settings / Power Management / Advanced Settings / Configure Notifications.

The notification you will have to disable is "Performing a suspension job". It is a bit poorly named and seems to be used only for the screen locking functionality.

Can you completely disable this notification and test if the screen still locks properly without it? I am currently overhauling the power management notifications and will remove (or, name it better and turn it off by default) if it doesn’t cause any trouble.

Thanks!

OK, I completely disabled it, as you suggested. That is, I unticked "Play a sound", "Show a message in a popup" and "Mark taskbar entry". Power suspension happens normally, and the screen is still locked. Success!

I noticed, though, that the settings were applied immediately I clicked "OK". That is, the Apply button remained greyed out, and I could return to the System Settings overview without getting a popup asking if I wanted to apply the settings.

Thanks for your input.
I asked the Solid people if that notification has some technical reason I do not know of - response pending. If it is not needed I will vote for disabling that notification by default.

I have removed that notification completely because it was totally useless.

Overhaul PowerDevil's notifications

- Removed "The screen is being locked" notification
- Cleaned up the notifyrc (half of the notifications was no longer used)
- Fixed notification icons' size being hardcoded to 20x20px
- Now using more specific icons for notifications rather than generic dialog-warning
- Added notification titles rather than generic "KDE PM" title string
- Added notification for "battery charge complete"
