(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***) Package: unknown Version: unknown (using KDE 2.1.2 ) Severity: normal Installed from: Red Hat Linux 7.1 Compiler: gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-81) OS: Linux 2.2.17-8smp i686 OS/Compiler notes: Users pick applications by their suitability for a task not by their toolkit. Given this KDE and GNOME (and other interested parties) should standardize on a single file type database. Its unusual to have to add an application to both of these databases and time consuming for administrators and end users (who may move between them both) to make changes in and maintain both. If people get concerned about certain file types always needing to match certain desktop environment specific apps a field to allow a specific app to become the primary association for a file in a particular desktop should be added. See http://www.freedesktop.org/Standards/shared-mime-info-spec AFAIK it is worked on and will be fixed soon. I suggest closing this bug.
As of KDE 3.4.3 KDE now uses the XDG associations *but* it is still using the legacy KDE MIME types. Once it switches to the XDG MIME types this bug can be closed.
I think this (old) bug can be closed now, as KDE 4 uses the XDG MIME database. Right, David? :)
